Dr. Nickolas Themelis is a professor emeritus at Columbia University and the director of the Earth Engineering Center. In 1997, he led the transformation of Columbia’s historic School of Mines to the new engineering discipline of Earth and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Themelis is member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and founder of the Waste to Energy Research and Technology Council, an international consortium with sister organizations in China, Greece, and Canada.

The Earth Engineering Center conducts a bi-annual survey of the generation and disposition of municipal solid wastes in the U.S. Dr. Themelis is the recipient of several professional awards, author of over 200 technical papers, books and patents. In the last year, he was invited lecturer on sustainable waste management in various cities of Australia, Canada, China, and the U.S.
