The mission is what you are there to support. This is what drives everything that matters in the space you are working. The military trains and executes based on mission. Without a mission how do you know where you are going and what needs to be done. I know I've stated this several times in the past but in the military lives depend on properly executing the mission down to the letter. Therefore those supporting the mission must be accountable and dependable at all times.
You can imagine in the most extreme types of situations such as when our special forces go in to capture a known terrorist that they have planned, written and practice the execution of the mission many times over. They know going into a situation what's right and what's not right so they have decision points to press on or abort. This scenario should be no different in the civilian sector. Every organization has a mission and the employees must be accountable for their actions and dependable to get their role accomplished. It becomes quickly apparent when someone is not performing their role. This could be for any one of the following reasons:
- Project is costing more than planned
- Project is off schedule
- Unintended breaks are happening in the process
- Not showing up on time
- Not putting in the extra effort to overcome the unanticipated obstacles

There are many benefits to having accountability and dependability as a core strength:
- You are seen as a leader
- You raise the team to a new level
- Promotions and rewards are available due to the respect you garner
- Your reputation will proceed you in performing various missions
- You become the go to person when someone needs to ensure their mission will be complete
Over the years I have become very versed in taking over situations that are not going well. I was brought into a $30 million Information Technology project at a Federal client's location because they were over budget, behind in schedule and understaffed. The government had issued a "get well" letter to our corporate office stating that if we could not bring the contract up to standards we would lose the work. Going into these situations is never easy but with my military background and having accountability and dependability as part of my core strengths I'm able to persevere. Long story short after nine long months of days averaging over 12 hours and working up to six days a week the contract was able to be saved by finding cost savings to bring the budget back in line, figuring out how to get back on schedule (eventually ahead of schedule) and fully staffing the contract. None of this would have been possible without having personal accountability and being dependable to get the mission done.
Someone is always watching and expecting that those that wore the uniform of this great Nation have something that others do not. Be the model and leader that shows these core strengths are part of who you are and you are the one they need.
