Auction 2012: Top 10 Reasons to Get Money Out

Posted: 01/09/12 08:34 AM ET

Tomorrow night, we'll see returns from the New Hampshire primary, the second contest in the Republican Presidential nomination. Most people think of this as an election, where voters go to the polls and select their preferred candidate. But I believe, and an increasing number of viewers believe, that our political system has become an auction in which the highest bidder wins.

If something about this election feels wrong to you, you're not alone. Here are ten facts about the political process that show why we need to end the auction by getting money out of politics. (Want to learn even more? I go in depth in my new book Greedy Bastards).

1) The Candidate With More Money Wins: From the 2008 elections: "In 93 percent of House of Representatives races and 94 percent of Senate races that had been decided by mid-day Nov. 5, 2008 the candidate who spent the most money ended up winning."

2) Congress's Main Job Is to Raise Money, Not Govern "Here is a general rule of thumb for US House incumbents. They need to raise roughly $10,000 a week started the day they are elected."

3) 48 Percent Say Most Members of Congress Are Corrupt "A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 48% of Likely U.S. Voters believe that most members of Congress are corrupt. Just 28% disagree, and another 24% are not sure."

4) Voters Think That Cash is King "A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday indicates that 86 percent of the public thinks elected officials in the nation's capital are mostly influenced by the pressure they receive from campaign contributors."

5) No Trust in Elected Officials According to Pew Research less than 25% of people believe they can trust our government at all, particularly our elected officials.

6) Outsider Movements Are Quickly Coopted Headline: Tea Party House Members Even Wealthier Than Other GOP Lawmakers.

7) Faith in All Institutions Collapsing
- 83% say of American adults say they have less trust in "politics in general" than they
did 10 or 15 years ago;
- 79% say they have less trust in big business and major corporations;
- 78% say they have less trust in government;
- 72% report declining trust in the media.
- A surprising majority, 54%, "believe that my freedoms are being taken away."
Pew confirms this.
Gallup: Satisfaction with Government at All-time Low
Pew: Public Trust in Government: 1958-2010

8) People don't like horse race coverage. Meanwhile, distrust in media reaches all-time high. (Coincidence?)

9) Cash Determines Voting What shaped the House vote on the proposed Keystone Pipeline? Oil industry lobbying: "As important as the vote total in the House, however, was another number: within minutes of the vote, Oil Change International had calculated that the 234 Congressional representatives who voted aye had received $42 million in campaign contributions from the fossil-fuel industry; the 193 nays, $8 million."

10) The Middle Class Is Collapsing

As we watch our way of life change radically, as we see our great country consumed by corruption and greed, we must have our own debates about what to do.

You won't find these discussions in our presidential debates, dominated as they are by money that separates the voters from their candidates with a wall of cash. That's why those contests feel so empty.

The debates we need are the ones happening around tables all over the country. They're the ones I seek to host on my show. And they're the ones I wrote my book to support, offering a guide to this country's structural problems -- and solutions.

I'm profoundly hopeful about where these debates can take us, because I'm not the only one who wants a better way. We all do. And together, we'll make that better way a reality.

Check out GreedyBastards.com to learn more about why and how we need to get money out of politics to restore our republic.

. We think pack money and big fundraisers and corporate contributions corupt congress . I contend that the legalized insider trading and stock deals to the personal gain of congress members is much more corupting. Could you imagine what the people sent to prison for insider trading are thinking? Talk about above the law ,its revolting! What ever happened to the stock act proposal? buy American, North American, if you can find it.

Fact: You get what you pay for.
Fact: People work for those who pay them.
There is only one way for the the people to have representation -
the people and only the people, must pay for it.
Until, our votes have more value than money -
only money will be represented.
The financial profit from public service must be eliminated to return value to our votes.

REAL Americans are Public Servants not , BRIBE SOLICITERS.

The only thing that has a "ear" in this whole mess is "money." Politicians, banks, and corps "love" money: It's their holy grail. The only way we are going to change things is to turn the heat up until money/greed becomes secondary to them. They must be made to feel so uncomfortable in what they are doing that they will stop. Positive reinforcement is not going to work at this stage, and we know they don't have integrity, or things would have changed. It is time to get up in their faces, and do it nonstop, and if they don't like it, tough. Just keep applying the pressure, and yes, they are going to protest and react and fight back, but we have to push through until they stop, until they modify their behavior. They need a smack down, and to know that their behavior will not be tolerated. I think maybe we need to put out a list, just like sexual predators in the neighborhood, of which politicians are most on the dole out/welfare corp list. It would also help if the media targeted these perps also. I don't know about others, but I am really in an "ugly" mood about this whole "greed" mentality. This is much worse than Watergate, and we should impeach every last one of them.

The fact is that we have LET them get away with it. This is not a new issue. It has been happening for decades. I knew press secretaries for senators that were very aware of PACs, etc., and the issues that were going on decades ago, but they still kept doing it because no one was stopping them, or saying, NO, you can't do that. We have to stand up to them in a really big way. We have to have a BIG voice because they are STILL not listening. Look at the Republican candidates, STILL trying to get away with it, play it down, act like we are "jealous" per Mitt Romney, propagandize people into thinking that what they are doing IS OK. We have to begin to force them into a corner, so they no longer think they can get away with it. We really need a Everyday People's Revolution. We need to support each other into getting involved. Writing our reps doesn't do it. It doesn't work. It hasn't worked. People like to criticize Occupy, but what other voice do we have? They ARE not listening, and we need to get their attention.

Mr Ratigan, you are right on all counts. Today while most American families work 2 part time jobs for $8.35 hr they no longer have time to read the latest news to find that the rich elite Corporations are taking over fast. Getting MONEY out of politics is job number one...Montana is showing us the way...We find Corporations are buying Congressman . We now know how that works out for the Public.
.Today right after Public install a legislator the K street lobbyist come filling his/her pockets so that in short time this person is a millionaire and just in time to do Corporations bidding..
Americas jobs are leaving so fast one is not sure who is really left until we go to the store to buy products and realize that it is stamped CHINA or Indonesia or S. Korea...so what does America make these days? not much you see when there are people many thousands miles away who are joining THEIR industrial revolution they are willing to work for eighty eight cents - 6.59 a DAY...American can not compete with that. So we are kicked to the curb once again. We now find that General Electric CEO J. Immelt just sent 245,000 jobs to India and China. He is now packing up his X Ray Plant in Wisconsin bound for CHINA...When our Prez hired Mr. Immelt I believe the THRUST was to get AMERICANS WORKING MR

Getting the money out is an uphill battle. Although I think it could be done, I would start by having candidates disclose all donations and from whom and then distribute the info at the polls on election day. That way, voters will know who the candidates are in bed with and can vote for the least "compromised" candidate.

Dylan, as you're undoubtedly aware there're few TV journalist who fully understand CDSs/CDOs and the inner workings of the financial industry as you do. This is not meant to patronize but to encourage and compliment you on your unique position to continue the fight. There will be those critics who will condemn your delivery as dramatic; ignore them for they do not fully understand or appreciate what you're conveying. Best to you!

The author has left-out the #1 reason to get the money out of campaigning and political determination:

#1 - The money is used to undermine democracy itself.

This occurs in three primary ways:

1) Contributors of large campaign funds expect reward, either by position with an executive administration or by implementation of the contributor's agenda.

2) Lobbyists are essentially bribing our representatives to represent their interests.

3) The money buy advertisements and talking-points air time. These both obscure and replace objective information, facts and analytical truth. Further, advertisement just plain works...it is very much like the performance of a Jedi Mind Trick on voters...and candidates are elected on false premises.

And this is important: it isn't happening. It has already happened.

It has been happening for forty years.

It is forty years since America was governed by a Representative Democracy. It is forty years since the money enabled a corporate executive bloodless coup...and the establishment of a Plutocracy. It is forty years since voters elected based on truthful information, evaluation of that information and a freely will decision to vote stemming from that evaluation.

You are missing the forest for the trees. The problem is politicians have too much power. That power will corrupt most people. Campaign money has little to do with it.
07:23 PM on 01/15/2012
Money IS power. And campaign money given by corporations and billionaires has a good deal to do with it.

Wall Street, for instance, has bought itself a good many congress-critters. We all know this. It's not the least bit confusing and no one is missing the forest for the trees.

If you removed the power of representative government, then there would be no check against vast corporate power.

The key is making sure our government truly represents us, and our interests. The money in politics has EVERYTHING to do with it.

I couldn't agree more.
08:30 AM on 01/16/2012
You are confused. No matter how much money a corporation has it cannot force me to do anything. The government has the exclusive legal right to initiate force on someone. This is why it is dangerous to have a large government. If your argument was correct there would be no need to buy politicians at all. They would just use their power to force you to buy their products or use their money to get rid of their competition. Since they do lobby for political favors like bailouts, subsidies, and regulations that kill competition it shows that governments have powers that corporations don't have.
04:34 PM on 01/15/2012
What gives the government the power to stop private citizens from giving however much money to whichever candidate they want? Why does the fact that it is a political race give the majority the right to stop people from disposing of their money however the see fit?

The way to solve the problem of money in politics is not to pass more laws and regulations. You can't pass enough laws to stop the rich from controlling politicians, and you can't stop politicians from putting a "vote for sale" sign outside their office. The solution is to shrink government so people don't feel the need to spend that much money on politics.

totally not buying it. Your argument is to let anyone who has the means the right to totally fund a candidate because it's "their money". The founders didn't want that, I don't want that and any sane person doesn't want that

and to let corporations have free reign. That's been tried, it doesn't work. Government is the only thing that can stand up to corporations. You want corporations to be able to burn coke? so they can make a bigger profit? they will if they have no regulation or meaningful enforcement.
11:02 PM on 01/15/2012
The founders would have supported the majority deciding what is good for private citizens should do with their money? I doubt that.

It is not the government's job to protect the economy or stop people from losing money. the freedom to do good things comes with the freedom to do bad things. If we grant the government the power to stop people from doing things that you think are bad, what happens when it starts expanding those powers to things you are good? I know its the same question as above, but it deserves asking twice.

January 21, 2010 will go down as a dark day in the history of American democracy, and its decline. The editors of the New York Times did not exaggerate when they wrote that the Supreme Court decision that day "strikes at the heart of democracy" by having "paved the way for corporations to use their vast treasuries to overwhelm elections and intimidate elected officials into doing their bidding" -- more explicitly, for permitting corporate managers to do so, since current laws permit them to spend shareholder money without consent.

How can you possibly make the argument that the federal government has the right to control how private citizens spend their money? We will cease to be free if we grant the government the power to tell us what is right and what is wrong. Furthermore, why would you want to grant congressmen the power to dictate the process by which we elect them? Don't you think they might angle the system to favor incumbents? Have you noticed how hard it is to run a 3rd party campaign? The current rules favor the 2 parties and make any 3rd party run irrelevant.

to Andrew, Prof. Chomsky is talking Corporations buying legislators to do their bidding. There are no limitations on this...case in point.. the Koch bros have apparently bought two of our Supreme Court judges . how do you feel about that..let me know if you need the entire story on this or anything concerning the above.

Great post! Our core Democratic principles have gradually eroded. The amount of money needed to run for office these days is a corruption that may be difficult to change because campaigns have become an industry in themselves. It is true that Congress and the White House are in a perpetual campaign. It is no wonder that we are in gridlock.

This country is on the verge of collapse of its Middle Class, due to the pervasive influence of corporate and 1%er cash on politicians, who themselves are tone deaf to the needs and wants of average people because they, too are part of the wealth class in the US.
Remember: the consumer segment represents 70% of the US economy, so if you impoverish people, you wreck the economy.
Do you think any of these people are thinking beyond the next fiscal quarter? Think again! It's like the robbers want to strip the country of all the wealth the remains, and to Heck with everybody else.
Why do you think they want to get rid of SS and Medicare? Because there's a lot of $$$ in those programs and they want to pillage THAT $$ too!
Disgusting, and maybe it's too late to reverse...

Just like how Obama hired obstructionists into his administration. Lol - Esp. (Larry Summers), Timothy Geithner, Ben Bernake, Orzag, Daley, Immelt, Lew ( Whom bet on the housing market to plummet with his hedge fund excesses). The left doesn't have the right answer, and both the left and right screw the American people. People think that one side is wrong, so the other must be right, and this isn't true. Republicans are for deregulations, even though they set up regulations such as the EPA, but dereg the financial markets - thus banks exploding- and then the left set up bailouts and regulations. Bailing out banks that needed to fail and liquidate, and setting up Zombie Banks. Both Dems and Repubs practice government overregulation by hiring corporations into positions of power for them to regulate against smaller companies, such as organic farmers- Its a horrible system, this left and right. I used to be completely against deregulation, until I realized that you cannot contain a vulture. The banks gobbled themselves up by their own greed and when they were deregulated they failed. They should of failed and been eliminated. Instead they recorded record profits during the same year, and goldman sachs stock went up 3 months straight even during investigations. This left and right is a horrible system.
