Fraudulent Birther Controversy Trump's Only Presidential Trump

Posted: 03/25/11 03:36 PM ET

Real estate tycoon Donald Trump's talk about a presidential bid is take your pick: a bad joke, a cheap publicity stunt, or the delusional raving of a guy with too much money, too much ego, and way too much time on his hands to stroke both. But Trump did manage to figure out one angle that was a surefire way to get attention. That was to dredge up the birthers' lie about President Obama.

Trump knew it would get the tongues wagging and an invite on a popular talk show. Though one of the hosts tore into him on it, Trump was not moved and repeated the stock line, "I want him to show his birth certificate," not once but twice.

That was more than enough to get cheers from at least one Tea Party leader who gleefully said that Trump's revisit to the bogus issue instantly elevated his presidential stock. It didn't. But the horrid and appalling truth is that it did put a household name, quasi-public figure on record that the issue has enough merit to become a campaign issue. It won't, simply because it's now so discredited that it's joined the pantheon of politically correct no-no's for any of the pack of would-be GOP presidential contenders to raise. Trump knew that too, and that's partly why he blurted it out. But he also knew that while it's a taboo subject to raise in polite political circles, a significant number, if not majority of Republicans, actually believe or want to believe that Obama's birth is a legitimate issue to dump back on the political table.

This is not a small point. More than two dozen lawsuits and petitions have been filed in various state courts contesting Obama's U.S. citizenship. The Supreme Court's refusal to demand that Obama pony up his birth certificate has done absolutely nothing to dampen the movement. If anything, it probably added some juice to it, by convincing more that the Courts are in cahoots with the Obama White House to keep the real "truth" about his imagined foreign birth secret from the American people.

In the past year, eleven states have in one form or another taken up the cry for presidential candidates, and of course the president, to prove that they are bona fide U.S. citizens. The even scarier thing about the bogus controversy is that in each of the states that are trying to get a Birther law passed, the bill's sponsors have gotten dozens of legislators to sign onto to their bills.

Georgia is a good example of the popularity of the Birther line. GOP State Rep. Mark Hatfield got more than one-half of the Georgia legislature's 180 members (including one Democrat) to endorse the bill that flatly demands that President Obama produce his birth certificate to get on Georgia's 2012 presidential ballot. Hatfield and the other bunch of signers rejected Hawaii's repeated public exhibit of Obama's birth certificate as "not sufficient."

The Obama birth certificate clamorers kicked their rumor mongering campaign about Obama's birth into even higher gear when some mainstream papers found the birth certificate controversy good copy and grist for public chatter. Since then the Birthers have crudely cloaked themselves in the mantle of public spirited citizens and legal experts with no personal, political, let alone racial, ax to grind with Obama. Their sole goal, they claimed, was to ensure electoral truth and accuracy, to make sure that all the legal requirements for holding a presidential office are met, and to head off a constitutional crisis. They even promised that they would put the matter to rest if Obama simply produced the original.

The real value of the Birther movement is that it's a tailor-made backdoor way to destabilize the Obama administration on policy initiatives he's pushing on health care, the economy, and a softer foreign policy outreach. The GOP, and especially Tea Party leaders and activists, are ferocious opponents of that.

Trump latched onto the birth certificate issue in part to keep his screwy, media grabbing presidential tease alive and along the way to make mischief against Obama. Beyond that Trump doesn't have a single policy idea that anyone one stage before comatose would listen too. But then again he doesn't have to have anything worth listening too as long as there are millions out there that want to believe and think the worst about Obama. The fraudulent birth certificate controversy will always suit them, and so will the likes of a Trump.

As stipulated, they (birthers) and now Trump obviously want everyone else to 'believe and think the worst about' Obama. But to swallow that whopper lie, we the people must be convinced our intelligence-gathering agencies--the CIA and FBI who perform the strict and invasive background checks on presidential candidates and their families, were somehow 'duped' by the Obamas. Or, that maybe Bush's Intelligence Director gave the opposition party's favorite son a pass on the whole birth certificate thing. Why no GOP hearings on such an obvious failing? Because there was no failing, and Obama's birth certificate passed scrutiny.

Besides, if that were even possible for the CIA to have willingly ignored such a detail as a valid birth certificate, I wager Arnold Shwarzeneger would have been the perfect candidate before Obama ever was.

We should stop giving these people the benifit of the doubt and call them what they are which is racists. The fact that a large percentage of republicans believe Obama is not a citizen simply means that this party is filled with racists and we shouldn't be shy about saying so.

If the President wasn't a citizen, why did McCain and Palin spend literally hundreds of millions to try and defeat a non-citizen? Seems like they could have saved us all a lot of time and money. Could it be because they KNOW he is a citizen?

A billion dollars to the person who proves Ronald Reagan was a natural born citizen.

The Birthers are right! President Obama was not born in the U.S. In fact he is the ultimate alien, an extraterrestrial. He was born on the planet Remulak and has had plastic surgery to conceal the fact that he is a Conehead. You may remember his cousin, Beldar Conehead, who was a regular on Saturday Night Live. It is vitally important that the Republicans continue to fight the good fight, lest this evil plot succeed, and we are taken over by the Coneheads. If you do not believe me, just ask Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy, who will vouch for everything I've said.

I think the driving force behind this has more to do with brass knuckled politics and xenophobia than actual racism. To be fair both sides have done this. The Democrats in the late 1800's tried doing the same thing to a Republican president ( who of course was white ). It was rumored back then that Chester Arthur ( our 21st president ) was actually born in Canada. The democratic party went as far as to hire lawyers to investigate this.

What it indirectly does, however, is to give yet another cover for the closet racists in this country to attack the man. Saying he is a muslim and not a christian is also another example.

President Obama although a President still receives a paycheck from U.S. Treasury and I think as such when elected he had to fillout a mountain of paperwork and one of those things would have been a form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) and honestly that should satisfy most as to his citizenship.

These birther claims are quite outlandish.
02:29 AM on 03/27/2011
No, it doesn't..... The I-9 paperwork does not indicate whether a person was born in the US......

But he was vetted.

“Security Directive 63 (1991) and Executive Order 12958 (1995) established the standards for Single scope Background Investigation (SSBI) for access to classified security information and sensitive compartmented information (SCI). Federal employees, Representatives, Senators and the POTUS are required to undergo different levels of investigations, but while a Senator President Obama needed to pass a SSBI and an update when he became President. The SSBI is an extensive and in-depth investigation including detailed check of birth records, educational and financial records, travel to and relations in foreign countries, personal habits and associates, possible subversive activities, and most importantly loyalty to the US. Upon conclusion the results are duly adjudicated by professional security personnel who render decision to issue appropriate clearance. This involves the FBI, Defense Security Services, the Office of Presidential Personnel, and a host of other security agencies. President Obama has no obligation to show his birth certificate nor other personal documents to the public since these are duly examined and processed according to security protocols by trained investigators.â€â€

And as if what 'Fighting the right' shared with you isn't enough, there is always his COLB, a State Cetrified document which proves date and place of birth.

To be quite honest with you I don't even care at this point whether he was actually born here or not. His mother is American, he obviously has spent most of his life here and understands our issues and is trying his best to solve them. He has good character and is intelligent. That's good enough for me. John McCain wasn't born here either ( he was born in Panama ) and he almost won. I hope these clowns keep bringing up this topic come the general election and then see how many independent voters are running away from them. President Obama will be a shoe in come 2012.

Until the Birther Conspiracy, I never knew that we all get TWO birth certificates, one short and one long. I have only one birth certificate. I asked my mother where my other birth certificate was and she thought I was making it up. I've asked everyone I know if they have 2 birth certificates and so far, none of them have said they do. Exactly which states give out two birth certificates when a baby is born?

#15, I have one long certificate. From Arkansas. 1943. I've had to order another copy and only received a duplicate of the first one. It is nonsense.

Every State has the original (long form) on file which is signed by the attending physician, etc. Most States have moved to issuing electronic 'abstracts' or COLB's (Certificate of Live Birth's) which are accepted for Passports, Driver's Licenses, etc.... They may even be accepted for Presidential Candidates - but it's never been legally challenged until now - and the lawsuits that have come before the Supreme court so far have been dismissed because the Plaintiff lacks standing, the Defendant (President Obama) has challenged each case in this way - lack of standing - and so far he has been successful. Apparently although the Constitution states a the President must be a 'Natural Born Citizen', it neglects to state who will verify and legally enforce this issue.... and only those who would have 'standing' can bring such a case before the court.

It is a little fascinating when you think about it.

FGS, this is so silly. If Obama was a "white" guy with an unusual name, none of this ignorance would have ever surfaced. Some Americans love to show off their prejudices.
