Former NPR analyst Juan Williams should have been canned at NPR for his silly, bigoted crack about Muslims making him nervous. But NPR, if it had the ounce of integrity and fairness that it incessantly brags about, should have dumped Williams a long time ago for his equally great offense. And that's his two-decade con job as a liberal, civil rights expert and even supporter. Williams never missed a chance to boast about his long stint with the liberal Washington Post and tout his track record of authoring books on the civil rights movement. Williams sold himself as a man who backed and championed the civil rights struggles of the past and -- his sworn mission was to accurately and instructively chronicle that struggle. Here are some of his titles that he used to sell his self-serving title as Mr. Civil Rights: Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965, Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary, This Far by Faith: Stories from the African American Religious Experience, I'll Find a Way or Make One: A Tribute to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, My Soul Looks Back in Wonder: Voices of the Civil Rights Experience.

But Williams was a fraud. That was more than apparent in the clashes that I had with him on Fox when he instantly assumed the requisite attack dog role and jumped all over any criticism made of some of the dumbest inanities from black conservatives. That was a consistent pattern with Williams. Front himself off as a Dr. Jekyll moderate, thoughtful, and balanced commentator who strives for fair and accurate analysis of issues on NPR. And then quickly transform himself into a raving take-no-prisoner right-leaning Mr. Hyde on Fox, bashing Obama, civil rights leaders, and shilling the GOP line on race.

But Williams couldn't have gotten away with this con job without the wink and nod complicity of NPR -- maybe the better word is disingenuousness. NPR officials certainly were not clueless about Williams' ruse. There he was for all to see, shaking and nodding his head in agreement with every conservative flack that paraded across the stage on the O'Reilly show and other conservative gab fests on Fox. His confrontational hit style on Fox fit in neatly with the tone, temper and rabid right echo chamber of the network.

No, NPR knew exactly what Williams represented and stood for, and it was not balance, moderation, and certainly not liberalism. Williams, though, served a purpose for NPR. The networks has sweated for years and at times have been scared stiff by the conservative hit pack that's had the network squarely in its sights, keeping a hawk like watch for any hint of a "liberal bias." Williams was their answer, and in some ways their protective cover. After all, how could a guy who routinely flashes across Fox be accused of spouting liberal biased views on NPR?

NPR needed Williams far more than he needed them. He was their perfect cover. That is until he became a liability. The hard truth though is that Williams' phony liberal front was and should have been a liability from the start. The pity is it took an outrageous, bigoted crack by him for NPR to do what it should have done a long time ago. And that's give him the boot.

I am confused about the different bios for Juan Williams, and who is he. If he does not even know who he is, how can he make judgments on African Americans? My guess is that the book he wrote on Thurgood Marshall is his in name only. One bio says that his mother was a seamstress and his father, a boxing trainer; Another says that he was; born Juan Williams on April 10, 1954, in Colon, Panama; son of Rogelio L., an accountant, and Alma Geraldine (Elias), a secretary. His bio is as confusing as his claims to be African American and Liberal. One of those stories is false, and it is probably the one that Juan Williams put out there. Why are Americans so easily fooled? Is it that we are so busy judging someone by how they appear? Mr. Williams knows how to play the game, and is laughing all of the way to the bank.

I don't know that much about him, but I do now. Yes, I see why NPR kept him all those years, for their own protection, of being accused of liberal bias. Sad, isn't it.

I agree with your basic thrust. I do, however, disagree that this remark in isolation was an offense worthy of termination. I don't take issue with NPR's dismissal of Williams but you explain quite well why they used this issue as a pretext to terminate him. They should have done so a long time ago but he was useful to them.

Quite frankly, I am surprised they terminated him in light of his usefulness.

This is why what Juan Williams said is asinine: http://muslimswearingthings.tumblr.com/

Before Fox with Murdoch grew grotesque hypocrisy in America for fun and games with millions of dollars awarded to the most bizarre statements and bullying behavior, Juan Willaims had this to say:

"Racism is a lazy man's substitute for using good judgment ... Common sense becomes racism when skin color becomes a formula for figuring out who is a danger to me."

Actually Juan Williams "Muslim" comment wasn't so bad. But this wasn't the first time that he's shot off his big, fat mouth on Fox.

He called Michelle Obama "Stokely Carmichael in a designer dress." This was back in 2009, according to Media Matters. I think that Juan (are you sure he's a citizen with that name? Just kidding, Juan--I'm SURE you don't mind if I'm politically incorrect here) Williams should've been canned for that disrespectful comment about Mrs. Obama.

Way to stoke racial hatred (for your own race) Juan, by calling The First Lady a black radical.

Williams, appearing on the January 26, 2009, edition of The O'Reilly Factor, said affirmatively and in his own voice of Michelle Obama: "If you think about liabilities for President Obama that are close to him -- Joe Biden's up there -- but Michelle Obama's right there. Michelle Obama, you know she's got this Stokely Carmichael-in-a-designer-dress thing going. If she starts talking, as Mary Katharine [Ham] suggested, her instinct is to start with this 'blame America,' you know, 'I'm the victim.' If that stuff starts to come out people will go bananas."

Gee. I don't watch TV at all except for sports. I did Not know that Williams spoke this way. I remember defending him, herein, when he was accused of being soft on Hume, saying the ocean water would take care of the oil. If I had known about this I certainly would never have wasted my time defending, this attack dog. What a terrible give away statement as to who he really is. The attack on the President's wife, is downright, creepy. There is no rhyme or reason to it, other than: hate her, hate her. As Fox Sick it works.

Hutchinson, I think I can see the object of your confusion. It's National 'Public' Radio, not National 'Progressive' Radio.

I call it "Nice Polite Republican" Radio and "National Petroleum Radio."

NPR is liberal only to people who think that Bill Clinton's presidency was horribly Marxist and who think that Sharron Angle is middle of the road.

Give. Me. A. Break.

So he wasn't liberal enough for national PUBLIC radio?!? I guess in the eyes of this guy, our tax money should only support one-sided opinion.

This coming from guy who thought PETA activists targeting Michael Vick had something to do with race and not dog fighting.

Just because he was wrong once doesn't make all of his opinions invalid!

Wow, I smell accomplishment envy all over this guy hutchinson. His description of Juan's "sins" are silly. He writes as is if he expects that Willams was supposed to be an activist, when he is actually a journo or an analyst. A good journalist will ask tough questions, even of his own side; i think it speaks to juan's integrity that even if he is a liberal, he would still play the other sides devil's advocate card when he was in a discussion witha liberal. The problem with liberalism in general is that it falls victim to way too much groupthink, which metes out punishment for not conforming to accepted practices. I didn't often agree with Juan, but I always found Juan to be a guy who could be a good bridge in a discourse between opposing views; a rare quality indeed in these times. This "author" (I use the term loosely) is massengill-ey.

NPR is so afraid of WHO is beyond me..disgusting. What Juan Williams said is the truth and every single American & Muslim know that common sense was spoken. So the Muslims can continue to push their radical, backwards way of life on us. Why did they come to America ...if it's so bad here then go home. Not all Muslims are at fault here what the Muslims need todo is realize why we think that way and try to assimilate and instead of wanting us to be more patient and give in NO

Why did I come to America? I don't know, ask my parents, and their parents, and their parents, and their parents....

Not all Muslims are foreigners.
01:26 AM on 10/23/2010
Huh? I'm muslim and I just learned from Herzog that I'm a foreigner and I need to assimilate. I guess my my ancestors have not really been in America since the slave trade. Man, how long does it take to assimilate?

I have no problem with a organization having a standard code of conduct. CNN fired Sanchez for his comments, NPR fired Williams for hi. I think Williams should have been fired after he said Michelle Obama was a radical black woman who blames America first.

i HOPE THEY QUOTE ME ON THIS BUT....

I listened to NPR for years and wondered "is that the same Juan Williams?" and then one day i saw a story that confirmed it and was shocked, it's like he's 2 people.one who seems reasonable and one who's closer to Billo and Beck than i ever want to be.

at least NPR kept his crazy under control. lol

The term bigot is used pretty liberally nowadays. I don't like the idea of suppressing serious discussion.

Bigotry is rampant these days, as it has been in the past.
12:45 PM on 10/22/2010
not really. the left just throws it out there to avoid debate.
02:25 PM on 10/21/2010
I agree with Mr. Hutchinson: Juan William has been a pandering opportunist his entire career. His political radar has him switching political positions and roles at will. That is not the trait of "open mindedness"-- it is the trait of someone who will sell his soul to anyone who is willing to pay for it.

Mr. Hutchinson is also right on point in terms of how NPR (and other similar organizations) have tended to use Juan Williams: as a "safe" black man who can be depended upon for not rocking the 'liberal' or right-wing boat at inopportune times. Does NPR and other scaredy cat 'liberals' think they have anyone fooled by keeping fakers like Juan Williams around?

Wow, with 'liberals' like these there's no wonder the right-wingers are having a field day in America at the present time.
02:52 PM on 10/21/2010
Juan Williams never impressed me that much on NPR - always seemed to be rambling on without really saying anything. Now I know why: opportunist.

Sounds like no big loss for NPR.

Hutchinson is one of those intellectual jackasses who exhibit self-centrism to the opposing racial views of even his own racial background unless they tow the same ideology (God only knows what that is....). How the heck does he get away with dismissing Williams' accomplishments (maybe a little jealousy of the Emmy, Earl?), especially when compared to his own? It's refreshing to see this article published. It just publically demonstrates how small-minded Hutchinson really is.....
