Don't expect any apology, retraction, or the standard 'I was misquoted' backpedal from renowned evangelist Franklin Graham for saying that President Obama has the Muslim seed in him. Graham's quip was a response to a question from CNN's John King about the Pew Research Center poll. It found a big increase in the number of Americans that think that Obama's a Muslim. But Franklin had another motive, and the motive had nothing to do with religion, belief, or Obama's genetics, but politics, naked, brutal, and raw politics.

The Obama-is-a-Muslim label carries a special taint, and Franklin knows it. No religious group in America has been more distorted, reviled, and demonized than Muslims. Simply utter the word, and this instantly conjures up for many dark images of bombings, terrorist attacks, war, chaos, destruction, and fanaticism. Muslims have stirred the nativist, xenophobic, and religious intolerance in many Americans that has always lurked just beneath the surface in American life. Politicians have at times played to that impulse and it in turn translated it into a massive religious social revolt, and reaped big gains at the ballot box. The rumor and fear mongering images of Islam and Muslims escalated with the emotion throbbing September 11 terror attacks. The attack stirred tremors among Muslims that they would routinely be targeted, subject to search and surveillance, and profiled at airports.

This was a mere dress rehearsal for Franklin's dump of the Muslim scare on Obama. This has dogged Obama from the first day of his White House tenure. His speeches in Cairo last year to a Muslim and international audience, his repeated preaching of tolerance and outreach to the Muslim world, his occasional tough line on Israeli settlement expansion, and the topper, his White House Ramadan dinner, and a his favorable statement supporting the right to build a mosque at ground zero. This for many was smoking gun proof that Obama is not a closet but an avowed Muslim. Though some GOP political strategists have urged caution about making the Ground Zero Mosque and Obama a campaign issue, the GOP will do it anyway. Fox News, the pack of right wing talk show hosts, and bloggers have had a field day doing everything possible to fan the fire of anti-Muslim sentiment. They have even plopped on the table an outrageously distorted, misstated, and misunderstood discussion of Sharia Law, and declared that any Muslim who believes in it and practices it does not believe in the Constitution and by extension can't be a loyal American. The implication being that since Obama is a Muslim than he must also believe in the strict tenets of Sharia Law and therefore..... The dots have never been more wrongly and badly connected.

Graham didn't wrongly and badly cross the dots out of ignorance, or misguided belief about Obama's birth. Like so many other bible thumping mega preachers, he's a politician hiding behind the good book. Tarring Obama as a born Muslim is a good throw-away line to fire the like minded crowd that he appeals too. The big plus is that it gives them even more zeal to mount another Holy Crusade to the polls in November's mid-term elections and cast out as many of the evil, sacrilegious, terrorist, and anti-American Democrats that they can get their vote on in Congress and elsewhere.

The Muslim seed strategy has already paid two other dividends, both relished by Graham. Democratic Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, and nearly every other run scared Democrat thats facing a rough and tumble reelection fight has fled from Obama's support of the right to build the Mosque.

It's also forced Obama to scramble and profess loudly that he's a devout Christian. It's not an implicit rejection of Islam, but it sends a pleading message that Christianity is the White House's faith of record. The appalling ignorance of so many Americans about Obama's religious beliefs refutes the old adage that religion and politics don't mix. Graham's "Muslim seed" crack about Obama is proof positive of that.

It's a truly ugly time in America fed by the Christians in name only of the Right. I wonder if any of them have actually thought about what the teachings of Jesus say, because they sure don't seem to live by them. Obama is so much more a Christian in how he lives and what he supports than any of them will ever be. I find it hard to understand how Christian values translate to being for tax cuts for the rich and against health care for the poor or how people who claim to be followers of Jesus so are comfortable letting their fellow citizens starve but oppose rules and regulations for businesses and banks. I find it puzzling that the future of the planet that the children they love to talk about will live on pales in comparison (Global warming is a myth!) to campaign donations from big oil.

The cynicism and hatefulness of it all is truly repulsive to me. And it's true that defending his Christian-ness fuels the fire of the secret Muslim crowd and allows people to infer that there would be something wrong with him being a Muslim. It's all just ugly and ignorant and sad and un-American... or it should be.

If the Republicans had any idea how to get us out of the current recession (that they are at least partially responsible for creating), they'd have a real, visible, in the public eye agenda. Instead they are using this cowardly program of innuendo through their surrogates. These are bad times, the nation is threatened. It's time to put party aside and work together or we will continue on our current course to bankruptcy and third world status. Here's the way I visualize their dangerous game: http://therightissowrong.blogspot.com/2010/08/big-game.html

Guys like Graham think they can hitch their wagon to the Crazy Train and magically avoid the inevitable wreck. No wonder the real Conservatives are worried about this line of attack.

Agree. The media will always run with the most flagrant headline. The GOP may not take this GZM and Obama "muslim" strategy to the game, but some "interest group" will or even some fringe candidate.

And THAT will be the voice heard round the world, just as Graham's words were echoed around the news sites. The lowest message is the one you hear repeated.

I have been following all this nonsense and cannot believe the prevailing ignorance of the population of the USA. Shame on Franklin Graham putting "seed of Islam" which will only serves to further ignite the flame of bigotry and self-righteousness of those who say they are Christians but have no love for blacks, poor whites, Hispanics and Muslims. President Obama is a fine, intelligent and capable man who was ELECTED president of the USA. And, during the campaign the hatred which was spoken and now the evil that is contaminating the airwaves is pitiful. No good can come from this. Evil begets evil and love beget love. AMERICA YOU NEED TO CHOOSE. For goodness sake, God has sent you and outstanding leader who thinks and is responsible for ALL citizens. I am applauded to consider what our muslims brothers and sister who are born in the USA think of all this nonsense. But, as a hispanic I see so very sadly how good common sense goes down the drain for self-centered, only whites need apply, attitudes which is raising its dirty little head once more. Times are tough for all of us and we need to place good will, trust and love toward our fellow man and pray for President Barak H. Obama so that all elected reps and senators will stop politics and work for USA and not their own bottom lines. AMEN

Could be worse, Graham could have accused Obama of being a Mexican immigrant Muslim. That way he could have covered a couple of hatred bases at one time.

The origin of this muslim smear starts with the Hillary Clinton campaign during the democratic primary against Obama when her staff started using it and it was quickly picked up by the right wing to be used ever since and with great success due to the widespread ignorance of the American people who have often bought the most outrageous lies and whose paranoia and hatred of foreigners is a very strong cultural trait.

The pertinent question is "why is ANYONE paying any attention to Frankie's opinion"? The idea of the "seed being carried..." dates back to Bronze Age thinking that women were just vessels designed to carry the children of men. Nice 21st century thinking there, Graham! LOL

As a Political analyst, why did you just concentrated on what Franklin Graham said? The bigger question is and should have been directed at JKing, the professed journalist.

In this nation, our Constitution clearly stipulates the no office is subjugated to a religious litmus test.

On that one alone, the press/media being the 4th Branch, is it not the job of the Journalist to inform the public and his audience? Why was the question necessary when the president himself had and has told his fellow citizens his Faith?

JKing and CNN ran at nauseam the Rev Wright out of context video in 2008. Then it was worth of the worthless CNN and the rest of the media to portray then senator Obama as a Militant Black "Christian." When that failed, the next meme is the birther in 2009 and now the Muslim meme.

JKing who converted to Judaism in order to marry fellow CNNer, Dana Bash, how would he like it if Rabbi Boteach, for an example was brought in to question his conversion to Judaism?

It begs to question why these so called "WHITE" Journalists, countinue to question our president of his birth right, religion and his Americanism? Why is that news worthy? Why the constant speculations? If they have a fact to the contrary, let them present it or treat the president with the same treatment as the 43 before him.

I have not agreed with you but as a political analyst, the media needs accountability.

But, but all of the media is liberal, aren't they? Don't they all, save Fox, do everything they can to push liberal, communist, socialist ideas and the people behind them? Surely Rush wouldn't LIE to us.

Calling President Obama a Muslim, Socialist, Marxist, Communist, Radical etc is the right wing way of not calling him the N-word because obvious racism wouldn't be accepted by the public.

There is no possible way any of his beliefs have been influenced or are currrently influenced by having a Muslim father, step-father, Muslim grammar school, and being raised partially in a Muslim country. The fact that he renounced his christian pastor, does not attend church, and has not choosen a new home church is totally irrelevant. The standards of logic that would be applied to every other person in the world are not fair to be used on Obama. His word is law no matter what and should never be questioned and there is no possible way he could ever have side motives for his actions. All Hail Obama.

In my book religion has caused more harm than any other institution in history. I'd like to see Obama renounce all religion and say he is a Deist, like most of the founding fathers.

Muslim, Christian, what-the-f*ck-ever. I wish people would stop clinging so freaking desperately to their bibles and qurans and whatever other archaic texts, as if they all didn't preach the same things... you can be a moral person and a good American without being a Christian- you can be good and moral without subscribing to any religion at all. You can also call yourself a good Christian or Muslim or whathaveyou and be a total moral degenerate. Get over yourself!

Hutchinson got the right story on this. A relentless outpouring of lies works for the anti-democrat anti progressive big money people to satisfy their corporate greed. Graham is a liar. A good christian underhanded liar.

Franklin Graham and all other Evangelicals have an agenda. It is based in long held Christian beliefs that THEY are the persecuted and everyone is out to get THEM. If one looks through history, and the wealth of these fishers of mentally deficient men, one can see the sheer greed that is attached to ANY church that calls itself Christian. I'm also pretty sure Jesus is not a happy camper!

So, let the seeds drop where they may for they will surely die in the presences of so much fertilizer!

RELIGION + GOVERNMENT = FREEDOM DETERMINED BY THE CHURCH (but, really greedy men)
GOVERNMENT - RELIGION = FREEDOM DETERMINED BY THE PEOPLE

So, swizzle sticks, it's your choice! Choose wisely Grasshopper...

Franklin Graham doesn't know anything about Christianity just like his father. All men are born with the seed of sin from Adam , not a religious seed. All men are born into death (sin) due to Adam. Franklin , how do you explain you early days of drugs and alcohol? Was that the seed from your mother or from your preacher father ? Religion makes men live in pride and arrogance and Franklin is no different.
