Obama Ugly Slave Tee: "But It's Not About Race"

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

In the wake of the flap that followed the New Yorker's intended satirical cover art last week, a shock anti-Obama t-shirt has made news. The shirt raises questions about whether the provocative message it bears is ironic or just plain ugly. The designer makes no bones, however, about his intent.

2008-07-22-braun.jpgApollo Braun is selling the shirt emblazoned with the words "Obama Is My Slave" from his Manhattan boutique. The shirt was designed by Braun.

According to blogsite livesteez, Braun claims the shirt does not reflect his views but those of "ordinary WASPS."

"For a lot of people, when they see Obama, they see a slave. People think America is not ready for a black President," he said.

Braun says he believes Obama is Muslim and that Obama also "reminds [him] of Adolf Hitler." "I can't stand Obama," says Braun, although he adds that none of his dislike for the candidate has anything to do with ethnicity.

Braun and his shirt made news when graduate student Nathanaeli Nassimi bought one of the $69 "slave" shirts and was wearing it as she walked through Union Square last week. Four African-American teenage girls took notice . According to Metro, the girls cursed at Nassimi about the shirt, shoved her, pulled out her earphones and spit in her face.

Nassimi has now decided to sue Braun. Braun's lawyer assures him that he has nothing to worry about, that the First Amendment protects his right to make the shirt and Nassimi's right to wear it.

Braun has designed and sold other anti-Obama shirts. The slogans he has used on those shirts have included "Jews Against Obama" "Obama = Hitler" and "Who Killed Obama?"

A guy in Arizona was stopped from selling t-shirts with the names of the soldiers killed in Iraq. Go figure. "bad taste" ya know.

Most of the time if you can tell me where you came and come from I will tell you who you are.
This is another lost soul who has been manipulated by the media and his own toxic mind.
For me, he is a dangerous victim of an intense emotional, frustrated inner, wound. The perfect troubled candidate with a bitter agenda and time to focus and project his inner hate on a reachable support.
As usual there is a lack of courage from most of those individuals, hidden behind the " It's not about race, I'm not a racist", but he gives us a subtle clue that proves the contrary.
Now if we want to waist time questioning the roots or the psychology behind this Braun's wheels. We need to answer one simple question, taken from his statement.
What makes him compare Obama to Hitler? If I do remember well, Hitler never spoke about Hope, unity, and faith in all the citizen of his country.
The true problem of this modern democratic society, is the power of a 5th amendment - who by the way needs to be desperately updated- in the hands of dangerous troubled mind, spreading hates and violence in our society.
Hope you are feeling me people.

A lot of people may see this as a free speech issue, but I see it as a PERSONAL safety issue

Wearing these tee-shirts in the wrong places could be a health hazard. People are a little too nonchalant about race in this nation. In the 1970's wearing a shirt like this would be akin to suicide.

I personally wouldn't wear one of these shirts in places like Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore, NYC, St. Louis, Philadelphia. Things could go badly and I value my safety.

I think this is merely irrefutable proof that New Yorkers are capable not simply of buying just about anything, but insisting on overpaying for it.
$69.00? Seriously?

Just remember this guy has an entire line of this sewage.

No matter how you feel about Obama, and I do not support either him or McCain--I plan to write-in, why other than a desperate cry for attention would you ever own this, let alone wear it?
On the streets of Manhattan , no less.

I don't know if this guy has a name for his label but let me be helpful and suggest: "50 Ways to be an Assehole"

Is Apollo Braun somehow related to Adolf's mistress Eva Braun? Otherwise, it would have been nice to get a follow up question on his likening of Obama to Hitler. Strange.

Nassimi has some issues to explore. She has the bad judgment to spend that much for a t-shirt and to wear that shirt in a public place. When she gets a strongly negative reaction, she sues the shirt maker.

He is probably working on a huge order for the Republican National Convention to go with their "If Obama wins, will it still be the White House" buttons

It would be interesting to interview a segment of the people who spent $69 for the shirt and find out their reasoning behind the purchase. Braun's statement that the saying on the shirt reflects "the ordinary wasps" views is ridiculous and demeaning. As far as giving him publicity for his rags, it is important sometimes to see what is lurking under the rocks.
