Big loss for the New York Observer: after three and a half years with the paper, Gabriel Sherman is heading to Conde Nast's much-ballyhooed Portfolio as a staff writer. While leaving the Observer was "a really tough decision," he told Gawker, he's "super psyched" for "the chance to join a magazine at its birth" and also for the delicious garlic-free delights of the Conde Nast cafeteria. Sheman has been a clutch player at the Observer, often getting great scoops for its "Off The Record" media column.
UPDATE: Gabe Speaks! ETP asked him if what he'd miss about the Observer and how he'd adjust to the leisurely pace of a monthly magazine after the Observer's legendary Tuesday night closes. Here's what he said:
I'll miss many things about the Observer. It's an amazing place with amazing people. There's nothing like going to Old Town with the staff on Tuesday nights after the adrenaline of reporting on deadline.
I'm excited for a new challenge at Portfolio, and the unique opportunity of working on deeply reported pieces at a magazine with such talented editors and writers.
Good luck, Gabe! Good luck also to people who want to pick up an Observer staffer; now you know where to find them drunk and happy.
