Fantastic news: Almost two weeks after being kidnapped in Gaza, Fox journalists Steve Centanni and Olaf Wiig have been released, dropped off at the Beach Hotel in Gaza City shortly before noon, Israel time. "Somebody did the right thing somewhere because here I am, and I must first off thank everybody for their support and for all the work they've done, as well on the air," said Centanni on Fox. "I'm just so happy to be free." The two are out of Gaza and are now in Israel.
Prior to the release, the most recent communique from the kidnappers was a video which showed Centanni and Wiig reading statements claiming that they had "embraced Islam with the Prophet Mohammed as their leader." Centanni said they had been "forced to convert to Islam at gunpoint," though he proclaimed the "highest respect" for Islam. Said Centanni: "It was something we felt we had to do, because they had the guns, and we didn't know what the hell was going on," he told Fox.
Fox has video and Centanni's recounting of the ordeal here; TVNewser has the background on this crisis. Congratulations to Centanni, Wiig, their families and to Fox!
