FHM announced today that it would be shutting down, with the March issue to be its last. According to Radar's Jeff Bercovici, the American offshoot of the #1 British lad mag never caught up to Maxim and was somewhat stymied by Maxim owner Felix Dennis' launch of Stuff, which gobbled up available market share prior to FHM's launch. The mag has a circulation of 1.25-million (perspective: That's more than Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Teen Vogue, Forbes, GQ or Esquire, according to the last Audit Bureau of Circulations tally in June 2006), but apparently it wasn't enough to keep owner Emap in the game; Emap's satement said they'd be "focusing resources on faster growth platforms." FHM staffers learned the news this morning, according to Gawker, which reported that the mag would cease production prior to the holidays.
