With a week 'til Radar's third reincarnation hits newsstands, Crain's New York Business reports that Gawker, which has ribbed the resurrected mag over everything from cover stories to internship job listings, has simultaneously been trying to poach its reporters. According to Crain's sources, Gawker Media Svengali Nick Denton made offers to Radar senior writers Jeff Bercovici and John Cook. Bercovici confirmed that he had been approached but declined to comment, while Cook said, "A couple of months ago, Chris Mohney from Gawker e-mailed me to ask if I'd be interested in a reporter position that was opening at Gawker. I told him that I wasn't interested."
Both Bercovici and Cook have consistently contributed to the scoops that have given the reincarnation such a strong break out of the starting gate, and are proof that frequent, original online reporting can be great for traffic. Gawker has beefed up staffing at flagship blog Gawker.com with four editors plus oodles of new contributors; this move seems to indicate that Denton & Co are looking to follow Radar's lead and thicken their own original reporting. For would-be online reporters, it's time to brush off those resumes! Just be careful not to highlight your experience pulling YouTube clips.
