See, this is why it's helpful to have women in media: Last night on the Daily Show they picked up on where they'd left off on the Anna Nicole Smith story, specifically on her "Death Fridge," making fun of CNN for turning the segment into "what's in your fridge says a lot about you" and then going into the CNN break room to look at the CNN fridge. Which was a totally dopey segment, but hilarious in the extreme because of what was in the fridge THAT EVERYONE MISSED - a freaking VICTORIA'S SECRET bag!!! It's the giant pink-on-pink elephant in the room - screamingly obvious to any woman who's ever pushed up her assets with an Angel Bra, and instantly recognizable,* except to CNN's Alina Cho and everyone else running the show over there at the Most Trusted Name In News. How are they supposed to report on goings-on in the middle east if they can't even find the story in their own fridge?
CNN, did you think that maybe you should OPEN the fridge and LOOK IN IT FIRST before filming your goofy segment? And Daily Show, you're not off the hook here - perhaps it would help to have more, say, women around to help with such stuff (Rachel Axler, Kahane Corn, Samantha Bee - you can't be everywhere). Now, perhaps if the segment was on "What kind of milk do we have in our fridge?" it would have been acceptable to ignore the giant bag of chilled thongs in the background. But, the segment was called "The Fridge Factor: What It Says About You." So you'd think that the fact that there was a big ol' bag of lingerie smushed up against the creamer would merit a mention. The day before Valentine's Day, no less (it could have been holding someone's lunch, of course, but apart from a crumple at the bottom corner the bag looks very stiff and upright, as befits a lady's undergarments). Still, some women love their panties chilled, so we're gonna go with "kinky CNN fridge pervert." Either way, ridiculous for CNN to ignore it and as far as we're concerned, a missed opportunity for the Daily Show to make fun of them (though the Larry King in the freezer thing was pretty hilarious).
*For those who doubt, consider the linked proof of insta-recognition, in the form of an IM exchange with the ETP Female Focus Group (aka litblogger, NYTBR and NYmag.com contributor and noted bra-hound Lizzie Skurnick), who knows herself some shiny pink-on-pink when she sees it.
