The mark of a good commercial is that you forget that you're watching a commercial - which is probaly why the Geico Caveman dude is getting his own pilot, and you can't even get your crush to return your calls (seriously, dude, I'm not standing outside your apartment building with binoculars for much longer. Call me!). Er, in any case, we couldn't help but be excited by last night's Colbert Report infomercial because honestly, aside from the fact that it's just a hilarious product idea, "Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream" sounds delicious: Fudge-covered waffle cone bits with ribbons of caramel? Oh my God. WANT. NOW. (Anyone tasted of its sweet, creamy goodness? Let us know here.) But it was also a bit of savvy cross-promotion on the part of Colbert and Ben & Jerry, whose bid to "bring some balance back to the freezer case" landed them in the plum spot across the desk from the anchor-cum-pitchman, and, I guess, on predictably excitable blogs like this one. But wait, that's not all! Who else got a bit of airtime on this skip 'round the blurry line between editorial and advertorial? (By the way, right now I'm drinking a Diet Coke. Because when we Eat the Press, we like to wash it down with a Diet Coke.) Master Chef Daniel Boulud who says the cream is "Yummy in his Tummy" (and also says that he's a Master Chef); Tim Robbins who is sitting, so you can't see the the menacing height that so intimidated Lloyd Grove; and Anderson Cooper, looking almost as delicious as he seems to think the ice cream tastes. Aw, widdle wabbit. Pretty decent bang for everyone's buck, I'd say. Right now, Diet Coke is pretty good bang for your buck, too - $0.89 with a club card at Duane Reade! That's less than a buck. Diet Coke, for ETP editors who will walk the extra five blocks to Duane Reade instead of forking over $2.00 at the corner bodega. Here, watch the vid!
Update: We got reviews!
"I just wanted to say that I found americone dream at my local grocery store yesterday and it's probably the best ice cream i've ever tasted. Def try it."
— Jonathan English - Indiana, PA
"I found Americone Dream last week in Chicago and basically ate the entire pint in one sitting. It was the best B&J flavor I had ever had. It is insanely tasty. In fact, as I type this, I feel like I need to go out in my neighborhood and find a pint for tonight. I'll try to stop at half." — Dan Shanoff - Brooklyn, NY
"Found it in the ice cream section last week. Didn't even know Ben & Jerry's had hooked up with Colbert. Bought it and am embarrassed to say I finished the whole pint in about 20 minutes. It was that good." — Jamie - Mount Wolf, PA
"My daughter found some last Thursday even though it was not supposed to be released until today. We tried it, it was good enough but she thought it was a tad bland. I usually only eat vanilla if I eat ice cream at all and I thought it was quite tasty. The most overwhelming taste I got was caramel. The waffles were nice. :)
Seriously, it is a good ice cream...It is quite caramelly!"
— Chuck Gouger - Morgan Hills CA
Thanks, Jonathan, Dan, and Jamie! Thanks, Stephen! Thanks, Ben & Jerry! Read more about Ben & Jerry here. They do good works. So eating ice cream not only helps your ovaries, it helps the world.
Ice cream good for fertility, study suggests [MSNBC, which seems vastly unfair to women on breakup benders involving pints of ice cream and reckless rebound hookups]
