Tonight is episode #2 of the brand-new season of "America's Next Top Model" — incredibly, the eighth season — and it may prove to be a pivotal one. Why? Because last week, two plus-size candidates were chosen to be contestants — the first time for the show, on the first season since the recent "are models too skinny?" controversy arose. It's also the first season since host Tyra Banks gained 20 pounds, was mocked in the press with headlines like "Tyra Porkchop" and struck back on her show, telling her critics to "Kiss my fat ass!" Last week's premiere of "Americas Next Top Model" was, coincidentally, smack dab in the middle of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (Feb. 28th - March 3) — so it will be interesting to see what unfolds this evening as the group advances and starry-eyed young hopefuls are picked off one by one. Will the plus-sized models prevail, besting the competition in the all-important runway competition and in "attitude"? Or will they be eliminated right off the bat, once the bitchy judges rip them apart? ETP has not watched the show, alas (just once on the elliptical machine at the gym, because we're FAT FAT FAT!!!), but our trusty HuffPo intern said she doesn't think that the plus-sized candidates have much of a shot. We don't really have an opinion, actually, we just wanted an excuse to run this awesome photo of a woman with a totally attainable figure. But if you want to weigh in* on the matter, feel free to do so here. We won't be watching, though; we're saving up for "America's Next Top Male Model." Actually, we'd be satisfied with "America's Next Average Male Model."
Update: Oops, it was on last night. ETP regrets the error, and the person who told us it was on tonight regrets thinking today was Wednesday. But, on the plus side**, the the two plus-size models are still in the running!
