The American Society of Magazine Editors has announced the finalists for the National Magazine Awards — hooray! There are 125 finalists all tickled pink right now. Congratulations, hard-working people of Magland! Here's the shorthand:

  • The New Yorker leads with nine nominations; next up are Esquire and New York with 7; Vanity Fair, GQ and TimeInc. castoff Field & Stream with 4.
  • Ellie virgins this year include: Best Life, Columbia Journalism Review, Cookie, The Economist, Metropolis, More, New Letters, Saltwater Sportsman, Seed and Wondertime. There's a Saltwater Sportsman joke in here, possibly related to Seed, but we just can't find it.
  • New categories! "Photojournalism" and "Photo Portfolio," which are different. Also, "Interactive Service" and "Interactive Feature," which are also different. Who knows, in a few years "Interactive Service" might have a whooooole new meaning (not to mention help us with our Saltwater Sportsman joke above!)
  • Christopher Hitchens will be recognized "for both his prolific columns in Vanity Fair and as the subject of a masterful profile by Ian Parker in The New Yorker." There is no question the dude is prolific but can a column that comes out at most twelve times per year be called prolific? Either way, that speech better be goddamned funny or he won't hear the end of it.
  • Multiple noms: The Atlantic Monthly (3); The Believer (2); BusinessWeek.com (2); City (2); Condé Nast Traveler (2); Esquire (7); Field & Stream (4); Foreign Policy (2); Glamour (2); Gourmet (3); GQ (4); Martha Stewart Living (2); Mother Jones (2); National Geographic (5); Newsweek (3); New York (7); O, The Oprah Magazine (2); The Paris Review (2); Rolling Stone (2); Seed (2); Slate (2); Time (2); Vanity Fair (4); The Virginia Quarterly Review (2); W (2); and Wired (2).
  • Surprise: Only one for Harper's, Men's Health this year. And where's the nomination for Self's breasts?

The Awards for General Excellence are biggies, here are those noms:

  • Circulation under 100,000: Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, I.D., Metropolis, Print, The Virginia Quarterly Review. Our pick is Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists for obvious reasons.*
    Salt Water Sportsman.jpg
  • 100,000 to 250,000: Foreign Policy, Mother Jones, Philadelphia Magazine, Salt Water Sportsman, Seed. It is our hope that you will never be able to see the words "Salt Water Sportsman" and "Seed" now without thinking of Genesis 38:3-10.
  • 250,000 to 500,000: The Atlantic Monthly, Audubon, Cookie, New York, Texas Monthly. Can New York pull it off for round two? Will The Atlantic be shut out again? And didn't it drop the "Monthly?"
  • 500,000 to 1,000,000: Condé Nast Traveler, The Economist, Esquire, Gourmet, GQ, Wired. Hmph. We know what Tom Scocca thinks of you, Economist.
  • 1,000,000 to 2,000,000: Entertainment Weekly, Field & Stream, More, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone. We note again that Time Inc. jettisoned Field & Stream. Nice work, More!
  • Over 2,000,000: Glamour, Martha Stewart Living, National Geographic, O, The Oprah Magazine, Time. Is Time Stengel-riffic enough to do it again?

The rest of the categories are after the jump. See you all on May 1st in your fancy dress!

*And non-obvious reasons: ETP's resident polymath Ankush Khardori has informed me that it's "a VERY good publication. If you were reading it during the run-up to the Iraq war you learned quite a bit about the holes in the administration's WMD case, including, for instance, the problems with the aluminum tubes evidence." NYT, please go and get yourselves a subscription to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
