WWD's Irin Carmon reports today that the NYT will hire a third public editor when Barney Calame's tenure comes to a close, closing an issue flicked open by NYT exec editor Bill Keller in January when he told the NYO's Michael Calderone that, hey, the NYT didn't need a public editor, it had that incisive and revealing "Talk To The Newsroom" feature! (We disagreed vociferously with Keller at that time, and are please to see that he reads ETP and follows our wise counsel.) Calame is out at the end of May — no extensions for him, which may or may not have something to do with rumors of friction between PE and He Who He Is Sworn To Impartially Oversee — and Keller is figuring out "the whether and the who" to fill the spot. Barney's last column is April 22nd. We've been tough on him in the past, but we like where he's been going recently, and look forward to his last few dispatches.
