Eat The Press

FT Alphaville has the term of the day: "full-frontal charm offensive."

That's how Rupert Murdoch's next move is going down: wining and wooing, mash notes and sweet nothings--all to give the Bancroft family a little faith that he won't harm the Dow. Most of this is elaborated upon at length in today's New York Times. Would you like some bullets? Here you go:

  • Murdoch wants: "more political coverage in the WSJ news pages."

  • "I might put more emphasis on Washington." To which a weary nation moans, "Oyyyy."

  • He promises to not indulge in mischief or scorched-earth tactics, but: "I'm not saying it's going to be a holiday camp for everybody."

  • We think we speak for everyone that if there were a Rupert Murdoch Holiday Camp, it would be so much easier to terrify children into behaving correctly. Look into this, Rupe.

  • Murdoch feels bad about how this has gone over with the Bancrofts. He's also aware that he's got to smooth things over with the WSJ newsroom.

  • To that end, he proposes "setting up a separate board for the newspaper, mandated with ensuring its editorial independence."

  • "My real intention is to try to get a meeting, not to impress them with my charm -- if I have any -- but to impress them with the intentions and feelings of my adult children." (cf. "Rupert Murdoch Holiday Camp")

  • He is emphatically against the decapitation of Margaret Thatcher.

  • Like many media moguls before him, Murdoch owns a "taupe sofa."
