Professional Athletes Show Their Soft Sides For Animals

Last November, I wrote about a new law in Baltimore that created the first anti-animal abuse commission of its kind. This law and the commission it created are the legacy of a dog who became known as Phoenix.

In May 2009, two teenagers allegedly soaked a young female pit bull with gasoline and then set her on fire in Baltimore. A Baltimore police officer, Syreeta Teel, saw the dog burning and rushed to extinguish the flames with her sweater. But even with Officer Teel's heroic efforts, the poor dog tragically suffered severe burns over 95 percent of her body.

Veterinarians and rescuers fought to save the dog they named Phoenix, but her body was burned too badly, and she had to be euthanized a few days after she was torched. Phoenix's torture and death were senseless, but animal lovers vowed that Phoenix's legacy should be more than the heinous way in which she died.

Since the ASPCA fights animal cruelty throughout the United States, when we heard about what happened to Phoenix, we immediately offered our assistance. The ASPCA has humane law enforcement authority in New York City but not in other jurisdictions, so we often partner with local leaders and organizations to fight animal cruelty in their localities.

We got together with Baltimore and Maryland leaders to create a task force to combat animal abuse. This task force, which in 2009 was named the Anti-Animal Abuse Task Force, is now known as the Anti-Animal Abuse Commission (the "Commission"). The Commission is comprised of Baltimore and Maryland officials, Baltimore residents, clergy members, representatives from Maryland animal welfare organizations, and a representative from the ASPCA.

Each member of the Commission has offered his or her own particular expertise on ways to combat animal cruelty. For example, the ASPCA's representative, Dr. Randall Lockwood, Senior Vice President of the ASPCA's Forensic Sciences and Anti-Cruelty Projects, has offered to provide (free of charge) training by the ASPCA for Baltimore's law enforcement officials on how to handle animal cruelty cases and to ensure acquisition of the best evidence to prosecute animal abusers. Further, Dr. Lockwood has advised on the link between animal abuse and violent crime and the importance of early intervention to prevent additional violent crimes from being committed. He meets monthly with representatives of Baltimore Police Department, Sheriff's Department, Animal Control and others to review new and ongoing animal cruelty cases and help develop best practices for handling such cases.

The Commission has been busy. In 2010, the group issued a 45-page report assessing Baltimore's animal cruelty problem and how to stop or reduce it. Recommendations included providing training for law enforcement agents and animal welfare professionals, passing stronger legislation, and initiating citywide campaigns.

Given the economic climate, some Baltimore citizens were worried that the city would not be able to finance some of the Commission's recommendations, so they volunteered to work with the Commission to produce a world class advertising campaign that would grab the attention of at-risk youth by using famous athletes to promote kindness toward animals. The idea was the brainchild of advertising executive Sande Riesett who was tired of hearing about animal abuse in her city.

The debut of the "Show Your Soft Side" advertising campaign conceived by Ms. Riesett was announced this week by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and the Commission. Through billboards, print ads and posters, the campaign seeks to reverse a misconception that committing crimes against animals is "tough" or "manly." It does so by having superstar athletes, including martial arts fighter John Rallo, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson and Orioles center fielder Adam Jones, pose with dogs and cats. These "tough" guys are shown kissing or holding animals next to a campaign slogan, "Only a Punk Would Hurt a Cat or Dog."

The work of the Commission exemplifies the private/public partnership model that I believe works best for helping the greatest number of animals. The ASPCA follows this approach whenever possible, such as through our partnerships with communities throughout the United States where we offer our expertise to increase the numbers of animals being saved in those communities.

The two people who are accused of torching Phoenix will be retried this November. (Their first trial ended in a mistrial.) While Phoenix's death was a senseless tragedy, we are gratified that his memory will live on through animals saved.

You can find out more about the "Show Your Soft Side" campaign on Facebook.

Corporate America is NOT your friend

I had a wonderful day today. I went to meet a horse trailer that is outfitted to hold 100 dogs in comfort. These dogs were trucked from southern high kill shelters. They ranged from dachscunds to poodles, labs to yorkies, five weeks to five years. They had either been put in the shelter by their owner or they had been a stray. A person, with a rescue had cared enough to do the hard thing and had pulled each of these dogs out --- Imagine being brave enough to do that? To go in and know you don't possibly have room at home for all of them. You know what that means for the ones you walk away from...

Today, I saw people meet that trailer, they were there to meet that trailer because their new puppy was on it, their new dog was on it. They were there to pick up there new family member or foster dog. This allowed the person who goes and rescues dogs to go back and save more dogs.

Grown men cradling puppies like babies, allowing their faces to be licked. An elderly woman getting an older dog, snuggling him, lifting her tear-stained face thanking the wonderful driver of that transport. Pre-teen girls telling me that this was their new "sister." The pink bow would be in the Yorkie's hair soon enough, I figured.

Thank you Athletes for showing how important animals are to our lives! Let's all show it!!

The title of the story "Athletes show their soft sides..." implies that taking a stand, actually doing something for another living being that desperately needs your help, when surrounded by a culture of animal murderers and animal eaters and indifference, and by your friends, who will probably ridicule you for doing so, is somehow weak, less than masculine, submissive or girly.

The opposite is actually true.

Taking a stand, actually DOING something for another living being, in the face of the ridicule sure to come, is a courageous thing, all by itself, not to mention the act itself, which is courageous for other reasons, the most prominent of which is the experience of witnessing and becoming part of a tragic story: a dog that has been abused that is looking into your eyes, saying "Are you going to hurt me?"

That takes courage.

Proposed headline: "Athletes show courage by helping the helpless among us".

The amount of juveniles committing animal abuse and the severity of the abuse is stunning and it is happening across the country. Though we need a national anti animal abuse law, we also need to take a look at why so many animals are being so horribly, barbarically abused.

I agree - the root cause is just as important as laws - -I think the rise in overt bullying is part of what we need to consider as I believe animal abuse and bullying have a similar cause.

We love our the pets in our homes, but as a culture, I don't think we respect animal life.

I've seen some films of what happens inside the meat industry complexes....talk about animal abuse! It's horrific. So I think we like to look the other way and not deal with what makes us uncomfortable, especially if it might impact our traditional way of life.

Anyone who would harm a defenseless animal, is truly sociopathic and devoid of the ability to live in society. I hope these people are found guilty and serve a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Thank you for drawing national attention to the Anti-Animal Abuse Commission and the "Show Your Soft Side" campaign. I spoke with Dr. Lockwood briefly at the conference. We appreciate his support and participation here in Baltimore so much. As a pit bull owner/advocate/volunteer in Baltimore city I can assure you that we have a huge issue here with animal abuse and dogfighting and need all the help we can get here in Baltimore. BARCS is understaffed and underfunded and could use your support. These wonderful pit bulls and cats that make up the vast majority of our homeless animals deserve the best.

Hopefully through education more people will understand that animals should not suffer at the hands of humans.

They should be punished severely. People who abuse animals end up abusing people.

Animal abuse, especially in young people, is a serious sign of trouble, with violence toward other people likely to follow. Such behavior must be countered with consequences, including treatment, community service, and learning to be a positive force in the world, and not a destructive, violent one.
Children learn from what they see, and can be changed. Community service in an animal welfare shelter could turn these kids around. It has been shown that prisoners in penitentiaries change their behavior when caring for animals, and depressed, unresponsive, institutionalized people respond positively to animals.

The entire nation needs stiffer animal abuse enforcement and penalities. I an talking about fines in the thousands for a first offense and then jail time. Any society which allows animals to be abused is twisted indeed. In this vein, what is wrong at the Bureau of Land Management? They are rounding up what is left of our wild mustang herds and some of the horses are making their way to slaughter out of the country. The round-up and transport of these horses is conducted in an inhumane way, which should outrage any thinking American. Our wild heritage is being stripped from us in the most abusive way so the BLM can rent national lands to cattlemen for pennies an acre. Contact your congressman and say NO to more wild mustang roundups!!

Would I still be at home if I had made you happy? Hitting me didn’t make me learn how. Would I still be at home if you had taken the time to care for me and to teach manners to me? You didn’t pay attention to me after the first week or so, but I spent all my time waiting for you to love me. I died today. Love, Your Puppy

I died today. You got tired of me and took me to the shelter. They were overcrowded and I drew an unlucky number. I am in a black plastic bag in a landfill now. Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you left. My collar was dirty and too small, but the lady took it off before she sent me to the Rainbow Bridge . Would I still be at home if I hadn’t chewed your shoe? I didn’t know what it was, but it was leather, and it was on the floor. I was just playing. You forgot to get puppy toys. Would I still be at home if I had been housebroken? Rubbing my nose in what I did only made me ashamed that I had to go at all. There are books and obedience teachers that would have taught you how to teach me to go to the door. Would I still be at home if I hadn’t brought fleas into the house? Without anti-flea medicine, I couldn’t get them off of me after you left me in the yard for days. Would I still be at home if I hadn’t barked? I was only saying, “I’m scared, I’m lonely, I’m here, I’m here! I want to be your best friend.”

Sadly, there has been a loss of respect for life in our newer generations. The older generations have failed in that regard. Glad to know that someone is standing between them and these poor animals. Thank you, and bless you for your efforts.

I find this comment interesting considering that an older GOP candidate was applauded by other conservatives for holding the record for most executions by a governor EVER.

What a wonderful thing. I can only hope all other states follow Maryland's lead. We need to do so much more to protect animals, and to punish all who abuse them. We have a LONG, LONG way to go.
