Beaten and Jailed for Atheism: Don't Let This Stand!

Posted: 07/27/2012 2:09 pm

In what Amnesty International describes as "a serious setback for freedom of expression in Indonesia," Alexander Aan has been imprisoned for 30 months for posting "God doesn't exist" on Facebook, along with some "offensive" cartoons. Again with the cartoons! He was also fined an amount exceeding double Indonesia's average annual salary.

If you think this is just about atheism, think again. The same people who, according to the Guardian, are calling for Aan's beheading also protest every Sunday at Christian churches, yelling "Christians get out" and calling for all women not wearing jilbab to be hunted down. Even moderate Muslim groups are being attacked for the same reason. The New York Times reported that one man was stripped naked, beaten severely, and dragged through his village for being the wrong kind of Muslim.

The charge is "deliberately spreading information inciting religious hatred and animosity," according to the sentencing judge. So it's not about atheism; it's about not being Muslim.

Alexander Aan is a pacifist, a government servant, and an atheist. He was beaten by a mob, arrested, beaten again in prison by Muslim inmates, and now sentenced and fined. It's a fair bet that once released -- if he survives prison -- another mob will come after him for "justice."

For the sake of all that is good and right, please sign this White House petition asking President Obama to intercede on behalf of a man whose only crime is expressing his thoughts out loud and to call upon the Indonesian government to free Alexander Aan. The petition requires 25,000 signatures before Aug. 16.

According to Amnesty International's press release, the organisation is of the view that "the charges and sentence are in contravention of Indonesia's obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) particularly Article 18, which protects an individual's right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion and Article 19, which guarantees the right to freedom of opinion and expression." Amnesty calls Aan a "prisoner of conscience" and has called for his immediate and unconditional release.

If we're to live in a world that has an organisation called the "United Nations"; if documents with such titles as "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" are to mean anything, ever; if we're to make any progress at all against arbitrary violence inflicted upon nonviolent people, we need to stop standing by while such injustices take place. As Paul Fidalgo said in his blog, if we can't move mountains for him, let's at least see if we can nudge a White House.

Have you signed the petition yet? No? Why on Earth not?

An Atheist should not be surprised at the justice he gets for his bigotry in a nation that is very religious. While I don't agree with the treatment he is getting, we must be realistic about this. Each nation has its own rules and laws. Prudence is needed before voicing strong opinions when those opinions are in the minority.

This is none of the US's business. We do not have any reason to interfer with other nations business. When are you neocons going to learn to mind your own business.

If more Teapublicans get into office, it WILL be. The Taliban are not the only religious fanatics in the world. Given the chance, Pat Robertson, Glenn Beck et al would push this kind of summary judgement in this country too.

I think you should read some more. Majority of Muslims are, in fact, non-arabs. All Arabs are not Muslims. Islam was sent as a message to all people, just like Christianity.

Islam was sent as a message to the Arabs, but over the years that changed.

Not true. It says it is for all mankind. It had to be revealed to a certain group initially but not meant to be just for them.

Indonesia is on a fast track to being 1 of the top 5 nations in population and is heavily resource rich. With negative memories of the west and colonialism, It is unsurprising that it rejects secularism, liberal ideologies and tolerance as its social basis. Expect religious/military consolidation mixed with policies that enforce cohesion within the population. I believe atheism will be unlikely to be an accepted belief system throughout the majority of the world for some time to come(regrettably). Atheism is not acceptable in some christian nations and can have negative consequences throughout Africa, South and central america, Russia to name a few. Alexander Aan certainly has a bigger pair than I would publicly display in an Islamic nation, this is a nation that jails and punishes many forms of self expression including punks, emos, gays, metalheads, drug users, extramarital/premarital sex, political dissidents, etc. Another 40 years of growth like the last 20 and they may become a new China. In which case while the individual like Alexander may pay a heavy price, the State may very well be powering ahead in leaps and bounds. Hopefully a western nation will negotiate freedom and emigration to more favourable climes for him. Indonesia is not ready for some of the conversations about social convention that we are still in the middle of ourselves or resolved last century but they are advancing rapidly from a form of repression and poverty that is hard for westerners to understand.

Nice defense there! But, the real reason they reject 'secularism, liberal ideologies and tolerance', is because of Islam -- not because of 'negative memories of the west and colonialism'.

If they were consistently against colonization, they wouldn't have invaded East Timor and decimated the population.

Indonesia has multiple religions and different sects of Islam, it is a very complicated country with different areas under the influence of different tribes/clans/groups/religions while a central government attempts to keep it under control and slowly modernizing. With the military infrastructure inherited post Sukarno it was probably inevitable that it engaged in colonialism itself, of course no excuse, however remember they do still "own" half of papua new guinea as well. Im not defending their treatment of this man however I do appreciate their ability to keep progressing despite the insane amount of conflicting interests and external pressures.

As a former atheist, I am disgusted by what he is facing. But I did not sign this petition, because it turned out that I would have to sign up for some White House website.

Are you serious? "Some" White House Web site? It's the White House, Tom. They don't spam. They just don't want people signing a given petition more than once, so they ask you to confirm your email address.

But honestly: "I'll let this guy rot because I don't want spam" is a really, really bad excuse, mate. Please, dude, go sign it for Alexander. And share this story to your friends. We still have over 19,000 signatures to go.

These so called "Islamic countries" are not really based on Islam. There is not one true Islamic country because the laws in these countries or not the laws or rules based on the principles of Islam but on secular aspects.
09:17 AM on 07/29/2012
Exactly. And there never was any either. That's the thesis of Tarek Fatah's book, Chasing a Mirage: The tragic illusion of an Islamic state.

No two people ever agree on what a "true Islamic country" is supposed to be like. So, stop dreaming about one.

This is absolutely the exact opposite of what the Quran tells Muslims to do. "There is no compulsion in religion." they need to go back and read.

OK, Name a single !s1amic country that tolerates apostasy and atheism? NONE!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination_against_atheists
Atheists, or those accused of holding atheistic beliefs, may be subject to discrimination and persecution in some Islamic countries. According to popular interpretations of Islam, Muslims are not free to change religion or become an atheist: denying Islam and thus becoming an apostate is traditionally punished by death in men and by life imprisonment in women. The death penalty for apostasy is apparent in a range of Islamic states including: Bangladesh, Iran,[79][80] Egypt,[81] Pakistan,[82] Somalia,[83] United Arab Emirates,[84] Qatar,[85] Yemen,[85] and Saudi Arabia,[86] although there have been no recently reported executions in Saudi Arabia.[87] Since an apostate can be considered a Muslim whose beliefs cast doubt on the Divine, and/or Koran, claims of atheism and apostasy have been made against Muslim scholars and political opponents throughout history.

Universal Sufism - most progressive ideology that Islam has inspired
Hazrat Inayat Khan - interesting man
Islam - a diverse faith not unlike the other Abrahamic faiths, Judaism and Christianity, with common themes and allegories, various sects and denominations ranging from fundamentalist to moderate majority and several major offshoots with differing interpretations of the nature of god and his prophets. Adherents exist in every country in the world and number above a billion. Modernization of religious interpretation is an ongoing event.

The most regressive ideologies in the world today are arguably political and economic rather than religious but that is subject to personal perspectives.

Not true. The most regressive ideology in the world today is fundamentalist Islam and its Salafist and Wahhabi branches.
