Eitan Fishbane, Ph.D.

Dr. Eitan Fishbane is a scholar and teacher of Jewish mysticism. He serves as Assistant Professor of Jewish Thought at The Jewish Theological Seminary, and his writing is devoted both to subjects of historical scholarship and contemporary theology.

Fishbane is the author or editor of five books, including the highly acclaimed "As Light Before Dawn: The Inner World of a Medieval Kabbalist" (Stanford University Press), a study of mystical experience and contemplative practice. Leading scholars have called the book “a dazzling, erudite analysis” and “a superb work of scholarship”; “a major contribution both to the study of Jewish mysticism and to the wider world of comparative mystical research.”

Most recently, Fishbane published "The Sabbath Soul: Mystical Reflections on the Transformative Power of Holy Time" (Jewish Lights Publishing), a work that translates and interprets a range of Hasidic mystical sources on the meaning of the Sabbath. "The Sabbath Soul" offers spiritual seekers contemporary and inspirational reflections on the practice and depth of holy time. Other recent works include: "Shadows in Winter: A Memoir of Love and Loss"
(Syracuse University Press) and "Jewish Renaissance and Revival in America" (Brandeis University Press).

Professor Fishbane is a frequent guest speaker at universities and synagogues throughout North America.
