Ekkehard Ernst is chief of the ILO’s Employment Trends Unit where he prepares the annual Global Trends Report and related publications to present ILO’s latest assessment of global and regional labour market developments. Prior to joining the ILO he was with the OECD’s Economics Department and the European Central Bank. He publishes regularly on global economic developments and their consequences for employment and job creation and advises policy makers in several European, African and Latin American countries on labour market analysis and employment projections. He holds a PhD from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

This is a bad time to be young and looking for work.

Globally, the youth unemployment rate is expected to stagnate at 12.7 percent this year and rise above that in coming years.

No region will escape the deterioration of employment conditions for young people.
