Elizabeth A. Sherman, Ph.D. is Adjunct Professor at the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at the George Washington University and teaches courses at The Washington Center for Academic Seminars and Internships.

Dr. Sherman is the founder and former director of the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts, Boston (1992-2002). Under her leadership, the Center established a graduate program for women in politics and government; a research institute focused on women’s issues and a series of annual conferences featuring prominent leaders, journalists, academics and office-holders. From 2002–2004, Dr. Sherman served as a research fellow at the Center for Public Leadership and two years prior, as a teaching fellow for the Institute of Politics, both at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Sherman holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Boston College, a master’s degree in urban and environmental policy from Tufts University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Emmanuel College. She is married to former Congressman Mickey Edwards of Oklahoma, vice-president of the Aspen Institute.

Sherman’s early career included teaching undergraduate and graduate courses at Boston College and the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Her scholarship has focused primarily focused on American politics, public policy, women in politics, political sociology, social movements and sociological theory. She appears frequently as a guest commentator on radio and television and in the popular press.

Dr. Sherman hosted Commonwealth Journal, a weekly public radio program in Boston, and received the prestigious Associated Press Public Service Award in 2000. Dr. Sherman was awarded the Abigail Adams Award from the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus in 1998 and the President’s Leadership Award from the Massachusetts Association of Public Administrators in 1993.

She currently resides in Washington, D.C.
