Ann Coulter Just Doesn't Get It

Posted: 10/24/2012 6:09 pm

Ann Coulter is just one of many. Her use of the word "retard" in recent diatribes against President Obama only echoes a prevalent notion that comparing someone to the mentally handicapped is a clever put-down. Ten years ago in high school, I listened as an extremely intelligent teacher explained to our class that we would be "retarded" if we misused the Bunsen burners. After making a mistake at a new job, my then boss asked if I was "a retard." Among the under 30 set, "retarded" is regularly used as a synonym for excessive intoxication. For some, "I'm a retard" is a sufficient form of an apology. The only conclusion I can draw is that Ann Coulter and every other person who misuses the word "retard" has absolutely no idea who they are talking about.

My brother David was born with Fragile X Syndrome. Fragile X is the most common form of genetically inherited mental retardation. As a result, David has no idea that two plus two equals four. He lacks the fine motor skills necessary to drive a car or use a knife. His concept of time is limited to today and tomorrow. While he recognizes many words, he does not have the capacity to sit and read a book. His misfiring synapses trigger tremendous bouts of anxiety that cause him to hit himself and pinch our parents. After each outburst he is quick to apologize: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to pinch you." He needs to be reassured as he tries to erase the incident: "I didn't pinch you, did I? I'm good, right?" He becomes desperate to verify the other person's well-being: "You happy? Comfortable? You do?" David struggles to adjust to changes in routine. His favorite meal consists of a cheeseburger, French fries, and multiple Sprites with no ice. He loves Skittles, Chinese food, cookie dough ice cream, and his birthday. At 24 years old, he can recite entire scenes from My Cousin Vinny and still watches Barney The Dinosaur. He never forgets a name, always remembers a face, and is genuinely beloved by everyone who knows him.

David has never dismissed another person based on the color of their skin, how much they weigh, the deity they worship, the amount of money they have, or who they love. It would never occur to him to ask for an apology from Ann Coulter. If she called him a retard to his face he would probably bellow one of his deep laughs and say, "Oh Ann, you're so funny." If she apologized to him for using "retard" to slam the president, David would say, "It's OK Ann, you didn't mean it." He could school anyone on unconditional love and acceptance. He's far from perfect but he is as close to the God I learned about in Catholic school as anyone I've ever known. I aspire to be more like him. I want everyone to know that being compared to him is the highest form of flattery. And I'd appreciate it if Ann Coulter would leave him out of her rants.

Ms Clark, I'm sorry all over again - this time for soapboxing. It does nothing, really. I ended up here after Googling around in search of a way to complain to Twitter and other platforms. I want to suggest to them that they seriously consider changing, or more strictly enforcing, their terms of use, for instance: if a Twitter account has more than x number of 'followers' , their 'tweets' be considered actual broadcasts, and subject to the same code of ethics of broadcast television and radio. (I don't know if TV has that anymore; I haven't watched it in almost 20 years, and I don't miss it a bit...). But I doubt they allow the 'C***'-word to be said, so whatever rules enforce that should also apply to the 'R-word' , and others. I'm also looking into boycotting if possible - and not just for her, but for the next time Rush or any other derision-monger decides to grab another handful of free publicity at some group's expense of lost dignity. Merely demanding apologies is reactive. We need to head these jerks off at the pass.

I'm sorry Ms Clark, but I think AC 'gets it' just fine. Of COURSE what she did was offensive, unprofessional, and downright childish (spoiled childish). However, doesn't publicly using her name provide her with exactly what she is calculating to get? Publicity! It's money in the bank for her and lots of it!. First of all, she is an entertainer, NOT a 'commentator' . Perhaps a 'confrontator' is more apt: she makes money by inciting outrage. What professional would ever expect to be taken seriously with such behavior? Do you think she'll see the error of her ways? She won't. Do you think you can reason with her? You can't. That is her act. Why support it? Instead, why not leave her name out of it, and go after Twitter and the other platforms she uses to spit on people for her own high profit? Go after her sponsors, any organizations she may belong to - complain to the Bar association, etc - but PLEASE don't reinforce her behavior and be her publicist.

She has no defense. Like Fox, when you have no defense - attack.

While male lifeforms throughout our galaxy may fantasies about her cosmic beauty she should not have demeaned those who are handicapped.

Thank you for your story, Elizabeth. You prove that those considered "retarded" have far more love, dignity and appreciation than many of us.

I agree there is something very wrong with Ann Coulter, but in her defense how many of us use the word lame, which means handicap.
05:56 PM on 10/26/2012
That's not actually a defense of Ann. If someone is doing something crappy, and a bunch of other people are doing something similarly crappy, it does not make the original thing suddenly okay.

I’m sorry, maybe my sarcasm was a little too subtle. Ann Coulter used an ugly word to describe someone, and is getting heat for it. ( as well she should ) But she’s unwell, and anyone who listens to her just empowers her.
So what about the people who use the word lame, do we demonize them as well? Let me tell you, I am handicapped and I find that word disturbing, and one hears it everywhere. Before we condemn someone, lets make sure we’re at least a little less gully than they are. Be the change you want to happen.

Beautifully stated. Give David an extra-special hug from one of his namesakes - and to you and your family as well. It takes a special kind of appreciation to really understand what everyone associated with the mentally challenged go through. (My wife works with the profoundly retarded.)

Coulter and "retard," Romney and the 47%, the GOP's "Team Rape" (h/t S. Colbert) ... what makes them and their "views" so sad is that most fully functional adult humans are able, once exposed to "others," to engender some sort of empathy.

You would hope if Ann spent some time with David, if Romney / Ryan spent some (actual) time with average Americans, they'd leave with a sense of how "the others" are challenged and rise to meet those challenges.

(Sorry, can't fathom "Team Rape" -- you have to presume they've spent SOME time with women in their lives.)

Still, it is difficult to fathom how alleged adults in this day and age could still resort to such blatant dismissiveness.

I disagree, part of what makes Ann Coulter so utterly loathsome is that she does get it and deliberately does it anyway precisely for shock value and to provoke a response.

Exactly, which we gladly give her.

Thanks for your response to Coulter. It seems there will always be some like her, who will do anything, including using a term like retard, to get into the limelight and make more money.
Your description of your brother, David, shows the reality of what so many families are like. Along with the challenges is so much love. It's clear that David has a wonderful support system with your parents and you. I feel he's got more going for him that Ann Coulter, who seems to have significant deficiencies.

In the end, that just serves to give Coulter even more attention, which is what she lusts for.

Ann is selling hate, she also seems to have a limited vocabulary when doing so.
