Hollywood's Hunger Games

Posted: 03/26/2012 10:15 pm

What I wouldn't have given to have been a fly on the wall when they cast The Hunger Games. The way I'd like to picture it in my mind is Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins sitting at a table, Gary saying, "So, Jennifer Lawrence?" and Suzanne saying, "Well, duh."

Apparently, this fantasy is not universal, and some people don't agree that Jennifer Lawrence conjures up the exact picture of the Katniss they know from the books.

But it's not Lawrence's acting chops that are called into question -- quite the opposite; she's almost universally praised for her ability to evoke the inner life of this complex, dark character. But there's something else about this award-winning actress that critics are evaluating and finding wanting: her weight.

Reviewers have commented on Lawrence's "womanly figure," her "baby fat," and even implied she is a bad physical representation of "people starved into submission."

So, I can't help but wonder if they actually think Lawrence doesn't portray Katniss correctly or if they're upset she doesn't portray the ideal we are all so used to seeing when young women star in blockbuster action films -- that of the quite literally starving actress.

Had hunger had nothing to do with Katniss's poverty in the movie, the disturbing truth is that Jennifer Lawrence's figure would likely still have been a point of criticism. Had Gary Ross cast someone as Katniss who looked emaciated, would the audience really have approved because it made her look more downtrodden -- or because it made her look more attractive?

As L.V. Anderson on Slate.com puts it: "Just as living in a world with abundant calories does not automatically make everyone fat, living in a dystopian world like Panem with sporadic food access would not automatically make everyone skinny. Some bodies, I daresay, would be even bigger than Lawrence's."

Moreover, whether or not Gary Ross's Katniss is actually starving is not made clear -- and it's also beside the point. The Hunger Games movie refocuses our attention from the symptom -- hunger -- to its root cause: poverty. Gary Ross does not focus on starvation as a stronger visual marker than anything else, which includes the clothing, physical labor, and dilapidated architecture of District 12. In fact, for all the times we see Katniss and Peeta sitting down for a meal in The Capitol, we barely see them touch their food, and the gluttony of the city is most powerfully depicted through the spectacle of its technology and its inhabitants' extravagant lifestyles.

I think the casting of Jennifer Lawrence was excellent because it meant they prioritized acting ability over body-type. Lawrence, though conventionally beautiful and -- yes -- very thin, does not embody the dangerous anorexic ideal we often see in our most fetishized female stars. In terms of the number of body-positive role models there are for young girls to look up to in the entertainment industry, the odds are already not in their favor -- let's not tear down one of the few they've finally been given.

She was PERFECT. As the provider for her family she was lean. She didn't have to be skin and bones because if she were it would have made no sense.

She hunted for her family, she had to be strong enought to do that.

This is just more Hollywood pathology. If you aren't a box of bones as a woman, then to them you aren't a woman.

We need to stop looking to Hollywood for validation. It's just not going to happen.

Anytime a fictional character is emaciated (and I don't know if that is the case for Hunger Games), it would be irresponsible to ask an actor to do that to their body for the role. Christian Bale is famous for doing this, and Matt Damon did it once as well. But that is not a good habit to get into, especially with young actresses. There are boys with body issues too, but the stereotype is that girls are victim to this trend more often. Our culture is so sex negative and hyper image conscious that anytime an actress isn't a rail, they take notice. There are other things about the movie that should be getting fare more attention than her waistline.

Lawrence is five foot seven and a half, and weighs 125, so she is actually a bit underweight, particularly for a woman with her curves. And anyone who thinks she's overweight needs to see her in her Oscar dress: when the Almighty was designing the fairer sex, this is exactly what was on his drawing board.

This does not surprise me. We live in a society that believes anything over a size 2 is "fat". A scrawny stick thin girl wouldn't survive in The Hunger Games. Katniss hunts and trades, has ways of feeding her family. So she may be more well fed than most people in her district and with her running around in the woods hunting, made her fit and strong.

It's nice for young girls to see a girl like her for a change instead of all these others girls in the media who have to diet all the time and barely eat just to stay thin.

If Katniss was starving that bad to be so skinny, she would have health problems, have no energy, etc. She would be killed off quick in the games.

likes Katniss cautions her sister, don't ask for more food so her name won't be in the draw more than necessary combined with her asking how many times her G-man's name is in and he replies 42, letting movie and non book readers know their names are not in 1/age, but rather 1/food ration, that should give a clue to muscle and round vs emanciation (sp?)... PAY ATTENTION and get over the all women look like carrot. MOST, yes, MOST women, world wide have hour glass CURVES!!! You go, Katniss! AND the greater good is not her hips, but her acting skill of bringing the trueness of the character to life! :-)

Whether or not Jenn Lawrence was skinny enough to play Katniss, the hero of Hunger Games, is the LEAST of what is wrong with this movie. Let's begin with poor costume and set design and then move to the glaring omissions made in character development and depth of the story told. The books were wonderful, the movie was shallow and uninspiring!

Some people are just incapable of being satisfied. In order to satisfy your complaints concerning character development and depth of story, the movie, which was already longer than two hours, would have required an additional four hours at least. Then you would have complained about the movie being too long and detailed.

No, not really. This movie isn't any more special than other movies that manage to have better character development and action at 2 hours.

Jennifer Lawrence was the perfect choice for Katniss. She's an incredible actress and she totally brought that character to life and made her seem so humble yet so powerful. And like many others are saying, Katniss wasn't really depicted as starved-to-death in the book. Yes, D12 is poor and many people are hungry but she hunted and traded for food to keep her family alive. Jen Lawrence was not at all fat in the film (absolutely gorgeous actually) and for her to be the heroine that she is in the book/film she would need to be stronger than a "starving" person. Katniss and her district are just poor and go without all the luxuries of rich and developed civilizations. The point was to show how the govt (Capital) was oppressing the other districts and enslaving them therefore eventually causing a rebellion. Since the Capital needed the people of the various districts to be able to work to support the lavish lifestyle in the Capital, it would make sure that the people have just enough food to sustain life. The book was great and the film was awesome. Jennifer Lawrence is the best!

wow-totally agreeed! Katniss hunts for food, so she would have more acces to it than others in her area-additionally, sporadic access to food causes the body to go into "starvation mode" which causes it to store and preserve as much fat as posiible. thats simple biology. (its the reason why people trying to loose weight should eat small meals multiple times a day-to keep the body out of starvation mode) Its not like she is OBEESE!

I read the book. I could not put it down. Can't wait for the movie. I recommend the book first.

I am surprised PETA and other Animal organizations aren't protesting this movie like they protest anything else concerning hunting.

I'm sorry but for anyone who actually read the books, Katniss hunts and brings home game to eat, and sells game for the other needs of her family. She even comments on how it made her strong. She is the hero of the book, therefore in my opinion looks just as she should. No where in the books does it refer to her as starving, it is the district thats starving. And she does everything in her power to keep herself and her family from that fate. Jennifer was a great Katniss in everyway!!
10:01 AM on 03/28/2012
Exactly. I haven't seen the movie yet but as for the books, there was only one time in her life where Katniss says they were starving to the point where she wanted to give up and die. Otherwise Katniss and Gale were out all day hunting to feed their families.

Miss Lawrence is beautiful, just as she is. She has a healthy, womanly figure, and I use the word "womanly" as a compliment. It actually made sense that Katniss would be healthy, in view of the fact that she was a consummate hunter. If her character could shoot a bird out of the air, it is pretty obvious her family would be well fed.
10:53 AM on 03/28/2012
and if she werent healthy-she certainly wouldnt lats long during the hunger games....
09:26 AM on 03/28/2012
I haven't read any criticism of Jennifer Lawrence being too curvy, nor do I consider her "conventionally beautiful." What she is (and I think the director would have had to look long and hard to find an actress who could better evoke Katniss' character) is real. Jennifer Lawrence grew up in Kentucky (as did Josh Hutcherson) essentially the same basic geographic location as District 12. As the writer mentioned, even with food deprivation, people come in all body types, and it is easy to see that Jennifer Lawrence is a muscular young woman, a natural body type that is not going to look waif-like no matter how thin the person might become. In addition, Katniss hunts, and this allows her family to sometimes have meat, and provides her with the ability to trade for additional supplies. Also, those who are quick to comment on the actress' shape must not have read the book, as the reader also knows that Katniss has put her name in for the reaping additional times to get extra grain each month for her family. Lastly, they have milk from Prim's goat. Petty comments by reviewers and bloggers over Jennifer Lawrence's figure indicate people who really have nothing of substance to say, so seize on insignificant surface details.

Jennifer Lawrence has a smoking hot bod. I would never consider her fat, or even chunky. That being said, it's true, I don't think she was what I imagined Katniss to be. The book describes her as being malnourished and starving--to the point of looking years younger than her age.

I hate to see starving actresses, especially in roles that are intended to be sexy (Megan Fox in transformers or Jennifer's Body, or Angelina Jolie in Salt). Is that really what America sees as sexy? Because it's not what I imagine to be sexy.
11:51 AM on 03/28/2012
Actually, what you are referring to refers to a much younger Katniss, after her father has died and before she has learned to hunt. 16 year old Katniss is in far better shape due to her hunting, trading for supplies, extra grain because of additional entries for the reaping, and milk from Prim's goat.

I have to point out a serious and prevalent misconception; that poverty and starvation automatically translate into walking skeletons. Here in the US, at least, they do not. Matter of fact (ask a nutritionist or doctor) you can have a morbidly obese person who is for all practical purposes starving to death due to *horrible* nutrition. The body just keeps demanding more & more food to get what it really needs & all it keeps getting (pardon my frankness) is cr*p.
Also, when you fast, you slow down the metabolism to hold on to body fat, so if you (again, just talk to a professional) eat only sporadically, you may appear to have a middle tire or "baby fat".
My point is, if people in poverty stricken areas are obese, there's a sound medical reason for that.
And I *know* the situation in the book is different, but;

A. Poverty (& even starvation) can = fat.

B. I am *sick* of any young woman who doesn't look like a pre-baby Kate Moss being called fat!
The young actress in question is not FAT ! She is young, healthy & quite beatutifull, so stop telling all these young girls that they need to get skinny to be loved or appriciated !!!
And don't tell me that's not what this is about, because it is!
