Currently, Ellaha Shaheen is studying International Affairs with a concentration in socio-economic development at the New School on a Fulbright scholarship.

Her BA degree is from Kabul University in journalism. She has worked for two different organizations in Afghanistan. One is Global Rights, which focuses on issues of human rights violations, and the other is CIPE (center for international private enterprise) where she worked on the project AWBF (Afghan women business federation). Their focus was on how to build Afghan women's business skills and orient their small or big business towards an international market.

Ellaha lived with her family from 1992 to 2002 in Peshawar, Pakistan, the bordering city with Afghanistan as refugee. She then returned to Afghanistan at the beginning of 2002 till 2006, and then traveled to the U.S. to obtain a degree in international affairs.
