Ombre Hair: I Went For Pink Ombre And My Mom Didn't Even Cry

Posted: 05/16/2012 3:05 pm

I really, really hate making my mother cry.

But when the chance to dye my hair pink presented itself, I took it -- even though the first time I colored my hair back in college, the streaky blonde highlights literally brought tears to my mom's eyes.

The idea to go pink had been brewing in my mind for some time, growing stronger with each Instagram pic Lauren Conrad published. Conrad, an MTV reality star turned beauty blogger, is a colored hair wiz: the bubbly blonde manages to experiment with wild-child hair while maintaining a fresh-faced, unthreatening look. If Lauren, the quintessential L.A. girly girl, could pull off pink ombre without looking like she just walked off the set of an Avril Lavigne music video... well, couldn't I?

So on a rainy Monday morning, I nervously stepped into the Serge Normant at John Frieda salon in New York, plopped down in front of celebrity colorist Aura Friedman (she'd done color for Nicky Minaj and Lady Gaga) and surrendered my plain brown mane to the gooey pink dye.

After over four hours washing, drying, wrapping, heating and literally painting my hair, I emerged with the perfect pink ombre.

I couldn't stop grinning as I walked out of the salon -- Aura nailed the color, giving me the exact look I had requested. But I was curious and a bit anxious to see people's reactions. Of course, I live in New York City, so strangers on the street and subway didn't raise an eyebrow.

But when I showed off my new 'do to my co-workers and friends, it elicited two distinct responses -- unsurprisingly, men and women have slightly different thoughts on girls with pink hair.

A sampling of male responses:

"Why pink?"

"It looks like you've dipped your hair in a candy coating."

"It looks like a Fruit Roll-Up."

"Did you fall into nuclear waste? Is your hair now Spiderman?"

"IT'S ALLIIIVVVEEEEE"

And the female responses? They all went something like this:

"OMG I love it! You know, I've kinda been wanting to try it... do you think I should?"

Pink hair, for guys, is a bemusing curiosity. But for women, it represents risk, a walk on the wild side. When women ask me about my hair, I see a gleam in their eye, the wheels in their minds turning. Could they, too, take the colored hair plunge? Let loose and unleash that carefree girl inside? Change their appearance drastically just for the hell of it? Not care if people stare or judge?

Well, ladies, you can. It's just hair, so why not? I promise your mother will forgive you.

it's ok, but it sure doesn't "wow" me...it really does nothing to add to her looks...

Why is this fashion news? She dyed a couple of inches of a tiny handfull of hair pink...My entire head was neon dark pink a few months ago! and I rocked it! if she was worried about what her mother would think, her mother must be Omish...because that is nothing

Fun, but unprofessional. It is hard to take you seriously. There are so many fields where this would be absolutely forbidden. Sends the wrong message.

72, female - whatever happened to common sense?

I love her hair and wish I could get away with it. Even though they (whoever "they" may be!) say that age is only a number, when you reach a certain age some things just plain look ridiculous! For the past 10-15 years, some of the hair styles and color applications (including the colors themselves) have been outrageous - and I wish I had the nerve to go for some of them. When I was growing up, the hairstyles were (in retrospect) rather boring! I'd love to put green and blue streaks or tips in my gray hair but I'm smart enough to know that it would be inappropriate and I'd look like a fool! Oh, well -such is life!

Has the fashion for the kiddies gotten so boring that this is exciting and risky? A tiny dab of pink at the ends of hair that can easily afford a cut when she's sick of it.
Seems sad to be young now. When I was your age we were all over the place with hair.

When I was young, ebranson, we were in one place with hair - whatever was the accepted style of the day and the only reason anyone ever dyed their hair was to cover gray!
12:39 PM on 05/29/2012
I guess we're not the same age, then!

I think its just her...I am not sure if she is very conservative or what but I see the most popular hair for young kids as Bleach white on top, black underneath and punk cut. This dab of pink is ridiculously safe and boring.

it really doesn't suit her, not at all....

I dyed my hair pink many years ago and I still have it. Not a day goes by that I don't have a comment from someone, good or bad. But, I love my signature pink hair and I don't see what all the hesitation is about, if you want pink hair, do it. Hey, if you want a blue and green mohawk, do that. It's your hair.

Is this another Onion article mocking the mundane? If the girl had dyed all her hair pink AND it was 20+ years ago, then it might be something. When grandmothers have done it in their youth and more actual grandmothers are doing it, it's not a big deal. (Same goes for painting your nail color black or various colors, in case another HP article is in the works about that.)

I don't like it. It looks haphazard and accidental, like it splashed on her.

looks great if u do it right and spend some time every morning doing a hair style. but it's also a bit un-professional for all those who work in a slightly conservative industry.

Not sure if I'm more outraged at these kind of articles or at the side boob section at HP. I'll have to check the side boobs again to choose.

It's stories like this that make me thankful for what I've got. To think of the horror that the poor girl's mother had to go through. She's a survivor, I must say.
12:04 PM on 05/29/2012
Are you being sarcastic? What "horror" did her mother go through?
