Paladino Gays
It seems, when you need to feel big and popular, school kids aren't the only ones who turn to picking on gays.

Carl Paladino's ratings have been falling. The uber-right wing candidate for New York governor started strong with a terrifying six point gap between him and Cuomo, but now has slipped to just over 30% support. Yesterday, in a classy reach for higher ratings, Paladino called homosexuals dysfunctional and chastised Cuomo for marching in the gay pride parade.

The scary thing is, Paladino's move might work.

Just like popular blogger Pamela Geller, the Tea Party makes its mark by finding an underdog and attacking them mercilessly. They employ the same tactics as the school children responsible for the deaths of Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh and the countless other kids tormented for their perceived sexuality. When we are young, this kind of bullying, picking on the weak, earns popularity. Turns out, it earns the same when we grow up.

The Tea Party refrain, "Take Back America" has been widely associated with an anti-immigration sentiment, homophobia and racism. Its popularity, however, is only growing. With the recent upsets in a number of Republican primaries, the bullying tactics of the Tea Party are garnering increased attention from both established American political parties and independent voters looking for a place to land.

The natural draw we feel towards the powerful, the bully, the one who chooses the scapegoat and acts against them, is an instinct cultivated when young. Because John Doe -- tea party protestor -- heard the unpopular kid in his class called a fa**ot right before he was beat up on his way home from school, he hurls the same slur at Barney Frank in his anger over illegal immigration and taxation for social programs. It is not surprising that Mr. Doe also feels more comfortable with and more supportive of a candidate who turns on gays in the lead up to a heated gubernatorial election battle.

The similarities between Paladino's political posturing and school yard bullying cannot be ignored.

Valerie Jarrett recently addressed a crowd of HRC supporters and emphasized the White House's commitment to ending homophobic bullying in America's schools. Still, many schools have an outright ban on discussions about bullying aimed at gay kids in particular. If we are going to change the direction of American politics, we need to start by teaching the younger generation a new way of interacting -- one not predicated on social hierarchy and power plays. We need to address the prevalence of homophobia in our schools. We need to undermine the bully where he or she is born.

Paladino will likely remain a bully for the rest of his life. The Tea Party will continue to recruit bullies and those attracted to that kind of power play.

Obama can break from this trend. He can act decisively to end bullying in schools by empowering teachers across the country to talk openly about homophobia and LGBT issues. Preventing the loss of more American children to suicide certainly depends on this. Interestingly, the survival of Obama's own brand of politics might depend on this, too.

Agreed..the Tea Party act as only for the group with the power..the big corporation who wants to avoid paying the taxes needed to pay for the services which we all need..the white guy scared of the black guy he wants to be treated as an equal..the straight people whose simplistic moral code dictates that it is a duty to marginalise ,frighten and outlaw gay people..while applying the label of "abnormal" "deviant"and "sinner".
The recently exposed Tea Party links to the English Defence League (EDL )confirms the bully/psychopath outlook of the movement. The EDL attracts football thugs and (not mutually exclusive) a number of British National Party Nazis and Combat 18 self styled paramilitary Nazis.
Hard questions must be put to the Tea Party in regard to their willingness to form an anti-Muslim alliance with a group whose activities and personnel would be judged as "vile"by most Americans.

I’ll bet Palladino “is” a bully, certainly every bit as much as Pelosi and Reid have been exposed to be. Yeah, all those ethical Dems running for re-election that voted for healthcare, stimulus and bailouts must certainly have cowered under a whip, given their current refusal to own up to their votes.

That’s fine. Bullies, like racists, exist in every large organization. It doesn’t mean they define the group. I mean, are all Dems as unethical as Charlie Rangel or Maxine Waters? Are all Czars as outwardly anti-capitalist as Ron Bloom? As deviously manipulative as Cass Sunstien? Are all DOJ members as ignorant of voter intimidation law as Eric Holder?

Of course not. But when you’re a floundering administration on the brink of losing the precise legislative majorities that “caused” the floundering, you gotta get out that grease paint and start smearing.

Hence, every Republican candidate is a bully, a witch, and an employer of illegals (heck, I always thought that last one was a “plus” to you lefties). An odd election strategy, to be sure. But when you’re not proud of anything you’ve done, and the citizenry despises you, what else is left?

P. T. Barnum said 'There’s a sucker born every minute'. In 2009 The Koch brothers through Dick Armey and his Freedomworks front created the Astro-turf Teabaggers. I’ve concluded that all Teabaggers are Koch’s suckers in an Army of Dick’s.

The Tea Party understands that they are looked upon as the unemployed idiots of this country that are completely unable to discuss anything.

So, how do they deal with it? They scream the loudest and angriest in hopes of shutting up the other side so a debate never exists

You have to go a long way into the weeds to get your conclusion that they are bullies.

You even have to admit that your premise makes no sense. Instead of starting by believing that people are stupid and acting against their own interests and the interests of their own country, maybe you should rethink your premise.

You really have no clue about what the people in the Tea Party think, and at the same time you believe things about government that aren't accurate. Man liberals are screwed up.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The entire purpose of your posts appears to be getting in "liberals are stupid" "liberals are screwed up"
Yes we know that. As to the contention that the TP are bullies, what does it mean when you have a town hall meeting and some people shout down other people, scream and yell while other people are trying to speak their piece? When one women tells the story of her daughter in law dying, others heckled her, ridiculed her and insulted her. http://thinkprogress.org/2009/11/23/tea-heckle-woman/
This is bullying. Of course a certain segment of our society has always reserved the right to screech at, intimidate and ride roughshod over those they dont agree with.

The premise for this article is completely backwards. The Tea Party is there because Americans are tired of getting bullied by the true bullies, left wing and/or right wing control freaks.

Yes the tea partiers ARE bullies. They say they are just concerned about government spending but what do they mean? They mean any government spending that helps the poor, unemployed, elderly, and disabled. They have no problem with the overbloated defense budget and no problem with unpaid for tax breaks to the people that need them the least still believing the bs that more money for the rich means it will "trickle down" to the rest of us. Well if that were true, then why is our unemployment rate so high? And please dispense with the too much government regulation argument because we've also had thirty years of just the opposite. Governmnet DE-regualiton, letting wall street and big business regulate themselves and what did we get for it? Economic collapse, a huge oil spill and rotten eggs. But the tea partiers would have everyone believe that it was ALL Obama's fault, wall street crashed just before the elections, the oil spill and egg recalls happened while he was in office but that doesn't make it his fault. Does anyone honestly believe these things just happen overninght? They treat the unemployed as just lazy but how can 15-20 million people who have always worked hard, paid their taxes and were responsible all of a sudden be worhtless? We weren't before. We paid into those programs . And I for one, with my heart condition would benefit from health care reform so tea partiers, don't YOU tread on ME.

People believe what they want to believe. Unfortunately, when you have an economy that is as bad as ours is now, people need scapegoats. At any given time in our history, when people were afraid the politicians took advantage of it. The same is happening now. The problem is that we now have folks like Beck et al are playing on/feeding peoples fears and amplifying it into mass hysteria.

Too many people just don't think for themselves anymore.

So true and Beck and Co. know that very well. They are nothing more than snake oil salesmen who know their target audience and they are counting their millions while feeding into the paranoia, no matter what the ultimate consequences will be.

So if a public figure gets up and says out loud what they believe to be the case in a particular situation or issue and they're liberal, they're speaking their mind or speaking truth to power. If the speaker's opinion is conservative, it has no validity and they're just a bully. This is what irritates conservative voters to no end. Palidino's view may or may not be wrong, but he's just giving his opinion.

When a person running for public office speaks his or her mind, it's not just opinion. It's the policies they want to make into law -- for everybody.

And why are the Tea Party candidates bullies? Because every one of the policies they espouse are intended to kick the people who are already down: low-income seniors, the unemployed, minimum wage workers, damaged veterans, pregnant women, people with long-term illnesses, children born into poverty, children born with disabilities, and teens struggling to grow up, get an education, sort out their sexuality and enter the workforce, all at the same time.

"The Tea Party refrain, "Take Back America" has been widely associated with an anti-immigration sentiment, homophobia and racism."

Where do I even begin? It's been associated with anti-ILLEGAL immigration. There is no evidence for homophobia or racism except in patently false accusations from the left.

If the billionaires and millionaires actually spent most of their income, it would create jobs, and that money would become income for other people. The problem is, they don't.

If you give an average working joe another thousand bucks, he will spend it. His kids have needed (something) for months.

If you give the average millionaire another thousand bucks, he might notice that he has it, but it won't make any difference at all in his spending.

If you give a billionaire another thousand bucks, he won't even notice that he has it.

And what gets me is that many pundits find this racist mob to be a legitimate, benign movement. Peggy Noonan got all scrunchy fuzzy on GPS yesterday while she mugged her stamp of approval on the teabaggers. It wasn't about race, said Peggy in her most measured pedantry, it was the economy and nothing more that drove the teabaggers to the streets and polls. Yeah, didn't we hear that about the NSDAP?

Of course the teabags teach their own kids to hate their own teachers, coaches, anybody who is charged with making school a bit more equitable for all, because accommodating those who are different is against the tea party credo. There was even an instance in Oklahoma where parents were furious that teachers were trying a new anti-bullying policy, because bad parents were finally being told they were part of the problem. (Maybe this is why being honest isn't the best approach.)Of course they are the problem, the main problem, but are too dumb to know it. This is probably why our kids aren't learning anything; teachers are spending more time controlling bad behavior, some of it caused by tea party spawn picking on others because even politicians are getting away with it. Then it's the baggers who complain loudest about education, again blaming the wrong people. So much for personal responsibility they are always droning on about.

The desperation to demonize the tea party is a little embarrasing. On another page on the Huffpost Tea Partiers are depends wearing, senile and toothless. Here they are bullies. About the only place you even hear of the tea party is in the title about their bullieness. The only other place they are mentioned is referencing "their take back America" tag line which was actually used by most democratic presidential candidates, notably Howard Dean. When we say that the Tea Party is going to beat the democrats like a cheap drum, we mean that in a figurative way only.
