The owner of the NYC’s Metropolitan Room, Bernie Furshpan, is always looking to keep things interesting. In addition to providing a performance space that accommodates first class jazz and cabaret shows, Bernie has really pushed the limits. Two years ago, he live streamed an extravaganza which broke the Guinness Book of World Records, winning Longest Variety Show clocking in at over sixty-hours. The room is regularly graced by legendary vocalists, such as Marilyn Maye and Annie Ross, in addition to giving a home to artists in all stages in their careers, from talented new-comers to those who are a bit more seasoned.

Now, Mr. Furshpan has created a series to recognize folks who have dedicated a significant part of their working careers to cabaret in a “This is Your Life” style format.

On Tuesday, the fourth of April, at 6:15, one of cabaret’s most stalwart characters, Scott Barbarino, will be the guest of honor. Mr. Barbarino has worn more hats in cabaret than most, if any, in the business: as performer, producer and long-time manager/musical director of one of the city’s prime attractions, Ellen’s Stardust Diner. A fine baritone, in the school of the late Jerry Orbach, he has spent as much time promoting others as himself.

Scott started out when he walked into the original Duplex Cabaret room and worked as manager/entertainment coordinator and was eventually mentored by the legendary cabaret impresario Jan Wallman. He went on to found Scott Barbarino and the Bev-Naps, a multi award-winning retro-vocal acapella group, that performed about town and in Europe for years.

Filled with many remembrances of the guest of honor, music will dominate much of the night. With musical directors John McMahon and Barry Levitt, the roster of vocal performers includes Joe Ardizzone, Aaron Lee Battle, Ruthann Bender, David Brian Colbert, Joshua Cruz, Lina Koutrakos, Sue Matsuki, Warren Schein, Kathy Robinson and Richard Skipper. The Barry Levitt trio will be completed by Howie Gordon on drums and Jon Burr on bass. Speakers will be Brandon Cutrell & Peter Leavy (the publisher of Cabaret Scenes Magazine).

Perhaps Scott, himself, will get up and croon a few numbers, for foremost of all, this talented performer’s voice is always a joy to behold.
