The American Film Institute announced its picks for the 10 best movies and television shows of 2016 on Thursday. The former list includes the three ostensible Oscar front-runners: “La La Land,” “Moonlight” and “Manchester by the Sea.”

AFI’s selections are a reliable indicator of which movies earn Best Picture nominations from the Oscars each January. Since the category expanded to as many as 10 slots in 2009, 76 percent of Best Picture nominees have also been recognized by AFI.

Notable titles missing from the 2016’s list include “20th Century Women,” “Hidden Figures,” “Jackie,” “Lion,” “Loving” and “Patriots Day.”
