Amy Schumer Responds To 'Formation' Parody Backlash With Topless Photo

Amy Schumer isn’t learning her lesson. Her first mistake was thinking that a parody video of Beyoncé’s black female empowerment anthem “Formation” with her “Mother/Daughter” co-star Goldie Hawn was a good idea.

Her second? Adding insult to injury by inexplicably sharing a topless photo of herself on Instagram Monday as a quasi-response to the backlash she received. Borrowing from Beyoncé yet again, Schumer captioned the black-and-white photo with a “Formation” lyric.

“You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation. Thanks for the exclusive release Tidal! We had so much fun making this tribute. All love and women inspiring each other.#strongertogether,” she wrote alongside the pic.

There was an opportunity here for Schumer to address the backlash in a thoughtful way. But by once again placing her body and celebrity as the focal point of a song about black womanhood — and using the banner of “women inspiring each other” as a defense — she only gives more credence to the “white feminist” label many have ascribed to her.

Perhaps by mentioning that the video was a Tidal exclusive, the comedian meant to signal that someone in Jay Z or Beyoncé’s camp approved of the parody. Regardless of permission, however, to not acknowledge the valid criticism shows a reluctance on Schumer’s behalf to recognize her responsibility in this mess.

A few hours later, Schumer shared this Instagram:
