Six-year-old Lex is already fighting the good fight for disability equality.
After a classmate at her school in southern England called her 9-year-old brother, who has autism, “weird,” she decided to take an heroic stand.
Lex penned a heartwarming letter to her teachers, asking them to do more to educate her fellow pupils about disabilities.
“My brother has autism and is not weird,” Lex wrote. “I would like it if we could learn about all disabilities in school so that everybody understands that some people are different but we should all be treated the same.”
Lex’s mother, Sophie Camilleri, shared the letter on Facebook on Oct. 10.
“I’m so very proud that Lex has this view and wants to change the way other children view others with disabilities,” Camilleri said. “She is only 6 years old and is already part of the school council, wanting to make this change.”
Hundreds of Facebook users have since hailed Lex’s “beautiful heart” and her courage for bringing attention to an important issue.
The United Kingdom’s National Autistic Society also shared the post.
“We think there should be much more autism understanding in the classroom which is why are encouraging all schools and nurseries around the country to sign up to our free autism resources,” the charity wrote.
Camilleri did not immediately respond to an inquiry from The Huffington Post about how Lex’s school has responded to the letter, but she told BuzzFeed News that the public’s reaction has been “amazing.”
“I don’t think she quite understood how much of an impact her letter had made though,” she said.
