Bill Maher broke down the only possible way that Donald Trump could win the presidential election on Friday.
And that’s false equivalence.
“They can’t deny Trump is horrible, it’s on tape,” Maher said of Republicans. “So they want voters to believe Hillary (Clinton) is just as bad.”
The “Real Time” host said the GOP had a “very powerful ally” in its pursuit of that goal: “Lazy people.”
“People who like to say ‘they’re (politicians) all bad’ because when you say that, you don’t have to do any homework,” Maher said. “You say you’re cynical about politics, don’t flatter yourself. Cynical comes when you know too much. You, on the other hand, haven’t bothered to learn anything.”
He cited the assertion of social critic Noam Chomsky, a professor emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, that the American public could retain huge amounts of detailed information when it came to sports but not on international affairs or domestic problems. But Maher said, “we’re not clueless.”
“We just apply our brain power to bullshit,” he added.
Throwing shade at those who spend inordinate amounts of time researching where to buy the best taco or plane ticket, Maher then took aim at the same people who simultaneously “don’t care who runs the world for four years.”
