An Oklahoma man found himself in jail Monday after being accused of violently beating and threatening to kill his wife.
This marks 32-year-old Derrick Maynard's fourth time in jail over domestic abuse charges, KJRH reports.
His wife, Angelia Maynard--who has her husband's initials tattooed on her hand--said she met her husband in a psychiatric hospital in 2006. Now, Angelia is asking he go back.
A police report stated that Angelia called officers to the Maynard residence after her husband allegedly threw an oil heater at her. Prior to that, Angelia told officers he threw a Nintendo Wii remote at her and hurled obscenities, saying she "needed to go kill herself."
Officials report that Angelia said Derrick picked up a pellet rifle, pointed it at her head and said "you deserve to die" before pulling the trigger. The weapon was unloaded, according to a police report obtained by KOKH.
Maynard is accused of then getting on top of his wife and beating her with his fists.
“The individual that was involved in this specific instance is well known to us. Bartlesville Police Chief Tom Holland told Fox 23. "Yeah, we’ve dealt with him for years."
Angelia allegedly told police her husband's black eye was caused by her while defending herself, but police say the man did it to himself.
“He rammed his head into the wall," Holland said. "He also did it in the cage in the police car, and I’m told at the jail."
Deputies said the victim and alleged abuser had been drinking whiskey on and off for ten hours. Angelia said alcoholism is a contributing factor to his mental illness.
Derrick Maynard's brother died in 2010, and his depression became worse after the death of his mother in January, Angelia told KJRH. Prior to those deaths, Maynard was arrested numerous times before, dating back to 2002.
"He's inside screaming for help and no one will help him," Angelia said. "He's not a bad guy. They are looking at him on the outside. I'm looking at him on the inside. I see this sweet, innocent man, trapped in his own guilt. His own grief."
Angelia said she doesn't want to bail her husband out of jail unless he seeks professional help, but said police are refusing to send him to a rehabilitation center or mental hospital.
"We can keep bailing him out all the time," she said. "He's just going to get out and drink and blame himself for his mom's death and everything else. We really need to get to the source and get him some help. He needs help. He really does."
At the time of his arrest, deputies on the scene said the man was unable to stand or sit up straight.
Maynard faces charges of aggravated assault on a family with a weapon, and a felony count of making threats to kill.
News On 6 reported that Maynard was sentenced to 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling in September after pleading guilty to domestic assault and battery charges.
According to police records, Maynard has also been arrested in the past for assault and battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and grand larceny.
Maynard's bond has been set to $25,000. His next court appearance is set for early January.
