How To Take Your Windows From Drab To Dramatic

All it takes are two easy steps.

Interior designer Nate Berkus has a few loose guidelines he follows when infusing a space with beauty and personality: focus on the details (like textures and shapes), add personal touches to the space and be willing to break age-old design rules. When it comes to dressing up windows, for example, Berkus believes that the best way to add some much-needed drama is to do something relatively untraditional.

"You don't have to have one treatment per window," he says. "That is not a rule."

Instead, Berkus opts for the more dramatic two-treatment look:

  1. Add a flat woven shade on the inside of the window.
  2. Add draperies to flank the window.

How you hang the draperies is key, he adds.

"Draperies on a rod... should always go from floor to ceiling," Berkus says. "It makes the ceilings feel taller."

And just like that, your windows transform from drab to dramatic.
