Police Officer Hospitalized After Served Glass In His Sandwich

Authorities have shut down the restaurant while they investigate how the incident happened.

An Ohio police officer was hospitalized Monday after eating a sandwich that contained shards of glass at a Columbus restaurant, authorities say.

The officer, who has not been identified, said he bit into the sandwich and heard a crunching sound. “The officer stopped eating and noticed his mouth was bleeding,” the Columbus police department said in a statement. “He then noticed glass in his sandwich.”

Grant Medical Center admitted the officer around 3 p.m and doctors kept him under observation overnight. He is expected to be OK, ABC 6 reported.

Investigators have yet to determine whether the incident was an accident or intentional, police said.

Authorities have not identified the restaurant where the officer bought the sandwich, pending an investigation by the city’s public health department. The establishment has been temporarily closed in the meantime, the Ledger-Enquirer reported.

Jose Rodriguez, a spokesman from the city’s health department, stressed that incidents like this one are extremely rare.

“Our investigation is going to be looking at how this could have happened,” he told The Huffington Post Tuesday.

He added that in such instances, authorities often pinpoint the glass to a broken overhead light or a damaged glass container in the kitchen.

“Our investigation is not a criminal investigation,” he noted.
