Volunteer Highlights Humanity At French Refugee Camp

Rita Beesbrouck still sees hope among the displaced who live at Grande-Synthe.

Since nearly 1 million refugees crossed over into Europe last year, volunteers have become invaluable at the makeshift camps that many now call home.

Rita Beesbrouck, a Belgian social worker, volunteers at Grande-Synthe, a camp in northern France that houses as many as 3,000 refugees. While providing food and supplies is a large part of her volunteer role, she has become a shoulder to lean on for those housed in the camp, talking the refugees through some of the difficult moments they've faced. Beesbrouck said she still sees "beautiful moments" amid the squalid conditions of the muddy camp.
