Carlos Tavarez had a reason why he wanted to pick up the suspicious package he allegedly left in his Budget rental car.
The 30-year-old New York City man told Budget employees that it was his "children's medicine," according to CBS News. Police say it was heroin.
Quick-thinking workers at Budget Rental Car at Newark Liberty International Airport called police when they found the package, hidden under the dashboard of the rental vehicle and left behind. Quick-thinking cops went undercover and answered the call of Tavarez, who arranged to meet up and retrieve the package on Wednesday at about 4 p.m.
Posing as Budget employees, police had Tavarez sign a "lost and found" form certifying that he owned the package. The form also served as a warrant, and Tavarez was busted on charges of heroin possession with intent to distribute, according to the New York Daily News.
Police say Tavarez's package contained 250 baggies full of 89 grams of heroin and was stamped with the signature "Fat Boy." Its street value was estimated at $2,500.
Tavarez reportedly picked up the Chevy Cruze rental from Budget in Manhattan and drove to Boston before dropping it off at the airport, according to The New York Post.
