The Right Way To Care For Your Contacts, According To Chemistry

We can't believe we have to say this, but don't store them in beer.

If you wear contact lenses, you're going to want to put them in and watch this.

In August, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that about 99 percent of U.S. adults who wear contacts are taking care of them all wrong. That bit of information is just one of many featured in a video (above) released Thursday by the American Chemical Society's Reactions series.

Not handling your contacts properly can result in some serious health consequences.

"Contacts interfere with the movement and mixing of tears, which have their own antimicrobial properties and can boost the defenses of the thin layer of cells that cover your cornea," narrator Noel Waghorn, the lead producer and writer for the Reactions series, says in the video.

To that end, here are some science-backed tips from the video to follow when caring for your contacts:

  • Never let water and contacts mix.
  • Make sure to let your case air-dry completely when it's not in use.
  • Use new solution every time when storing your contacts in their case.
  • Rub your contacts each time you rinse and clean them.
