The 'Independence Day: Resurgence' Trailer Is So Good Even Jeff Goldblum Can't Handle It

Down Will Smith, up a Hemsworth.

Football fans got quite the treat this Sunday when Fox aired the first trailer for the hotly anticipated follow-up to the sci-fi classic "Independence Day."

Picking up 20 years later, "Independence Day: Resurgence" follows humanity's second round with an alien race hell-bent on world domination.

After the events of the first film, Earth has shored up its defenses, using alien tech to prevent another invasion. However, an alien distress signal draws a new force of life-threatening extraterrestrials, forcing the human race to once again fight for its survival.

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Vivica Fox reprise their roles from the original film, while Liam Hemsworth and newcomer Jessie Usher round out the new cast.

Goldblum, of course, delivers cheesy lines like "I've spent 20 years trying to get us ready for this" and "That's definitely bigger than the last one" with his trademark campiness.

Noticeably absent from the trailer is Will Smith, who played the protagonist in the first film. According to the New York Daily News, director Roland Emmerich confirmed in 2013 that Smith would not be part of the film because "he's too expensive."

Your loss, Will!
