The family of Jeremy Mardis gathered Monday afternoon to mourn and bury the 6-year-old in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Two police officers shot and killed the boy last week in Marksville, Louisiana, as he sat in the passenger seat of his father's car. Police say his father, Chris Few, was attempting to evade officers when they opened fire. Few was seriously injured. Body camera footage reviewed by the family's lawyer shows Few had his hands up before officers began shooting.
"He was always smiling, always happy," Jeremy's grandmother, Samantha Few, told WAFB last week. "He was diagnosed with autism when he was 2. He loved everyone he met and they loved him ... He didn't deserve what happened. He wouldn't hurt a fly."
An obituary described the 6-year-old as "a very loving little boy and a true gift from God."
Miranda Sigler, who babysat Jeremy, remembered him as “a very outgoing kid” who “always had a smile on his face,” she told NBC News on Saturday.
"Your heart burns, you don't know how to feel," she added.
Lt. Derrick Stafford, 32, and Norris Greenhouse Jr., 23, the two officers involved in the shooting, have both been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder. A judge set their bond at $1 million each on Monday.
