A toddler in Bakersfield, Calif. was murdered by his 17-year-old babysitter, police believe.
Deputies were called to the home of Kayden Webb, 2, at about 3:15 a.m. Monday, Bakersfield Now reported. They found the child not breathing and he was pronounced dead hours later.
While at the home, deputies say they found "probable cause" to believe the teenage girl caused the boy's death, ABC 23 reported.
"It is our belief at this point that he died as a result of injuries that he sustained while he was with the female suspect," Ray Pruitt of Kern County Sheriff's Department told Kern Golden Empire.
A neighbor told Bakersfield Now that the teen was homeless, and the toddler's mother had taken her in and was letting her help with Kayden because she "didn't want to leave her on the street."
"She was good with Kayden," another neighbor told the station.
The babysitter has been charged with first-degree murder.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the victim's gender as female. The child was a male.
