Laverne Cox Finally Meets The Trans Teen Who Could Change History

Gavin Grimm is at the heart of an upcoming SCOTUS case.

Gavin Grimm, the transgender teen at the heart of an upcoming SCOTUS case dealing with transgender rights, met Laverne Cox on Saturday only one week after the actress used her time on the Grammy’s stage to bring visibility to his case.

Grimm Facebook Lived the event from his public page, with Cox reflecting on how Grimm’s story is emblematic of the fight for civil rights by different minority groups throughout the course of American history.

”Often in the course of our country’s history is one person who didn’t want to be famous, didn’t want to be of note but stood up for what was right and they changed the course of history,” Cox says in the above video. “And I think that could be you Gavin ― I hope that is you.”

Grimm’s fight for the right to use the bathroom that corresponds with his gender identity in his Virginia public school is going all the way to SCOTUS on March 28, the ruling of which could have profound implications for the transgender community.

During last week’s Grammy’s, Cox used her time introducing Lady Gaga and Metallica to tell viewers to “Please Google Gavin Grimm. He’s going to the Supreme Court in March. #StandWithGavin.”

Grimm later responded to Cox’s call-out saying, “I was really touched and thrilled and honored that that was the first thing out of her mouth... at this point, that’s the role I occupy and I want to make sure I’m using that platform for positive.”
