If the weekend box office was the Olympics, Melissa Rauch's new gymnastics comedy "The Bronze" wouldn't have even medaled.
"The Big Bang Theory" actress' passion project now stands as the fifth biggest flop to open in more than 1,000 theaters, according to Entertainment Weekly. The film grossed an estimated $421,434, opening in 1,167 theaters and pulling in a dismal $361 per location.
The cinematic treasure "Transylmania" still takes gold, however, for having the all-time worst opening in 1,000+ locations, raking in a mere $263,941.
"The Bronze," co-written by Rauch and her husband Winston Beigel, brings the "Bad Teacher" formula to the gymnastics world. Rauch plays a morally corrupt former gymnastics bronze medalist who uses her fading celebrity for personal gain in her small town, until a young up-and-comer threatens her standing.
Sounds funny, right? But the film received a tepid response from critics at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015, apart from a scene in the film described as "one of the raunchiest sex sequences in movie history." Before the company went bankrupt, Relativity reportedly paid $3 million for the project, but lost the rights to Sony Pictures Classics.
Disney's "Zootopia," however, continues to dominate the box office for the third week in a row, making an impressive $38 million in sales this weekend. Jennifer Garner's faith based film "Miracles From Heaven" also performed better than expected, grossing $15 million and coming in third place after the disappointing performance of "The Divergent Series: Allegiant."
Does a gymnastic film bombing at the box office dramatically reduce the chances of a "Stick It" sequel? Because that's a world we don't want to live in.
