This Week In Indie Cinema: Spurlock Takes On Comic Cons

Comic book fans, rejoice! This week at O Cinema, the theater is hosting a comic con experience of its own with the screening of popular comic books turned into movies as well as the documentary about the father of all comics in "With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story."

Also, catch some old classics this week with Marilyn Monroe in "The Misfits" at the Miami Beach Cinematheque and the Italian "Swept Away" at Coral Gables Art Cinema. If you haven't had a chance to catch some long running films, watch "Monsieur Lazhar" and "Chico & Rita" at Cinema Paradiso.

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope

With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story

Comic geeks everywhere worship the existence of Stan Lee, who is responsible for co-creating iconic comics "Spider-Man," "Fantastic Four," "X-Men," "Iron Man," "Thor" and "The Hulk." This documentary starts with the budding artist’s Depression-era roots into his time as a central figure at Marvel Comics. Today, this real life super hero’s work is seen in more than 1 billion copies of comics in 75 countries and 25 languages.

SuperMan II: The Richard Donner Cut

Superman makes the tough choice to give up his responsibilities as a superhero to be with his love, Lois Lane, right when three villains led by Lex Luthor decide to attack.

Batman

Tim Burton’s 1989 film is a battle between Michael Keaton’s Batman and Jack Nicholson’s Joker, who spreads Smilex gas throughout Gotham City. The original Batmobile from the movie will be on display from 7 to 11 p.m. before the movie plays.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Turtle power reigns supreme as Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo and Raphael take on villains to save their city in this 1990 cult classic.

Swept Away (Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto)

Tickets: $10 suggested donation to the Classic Italian Film Program

Lina Wertmüller’s controversial 1974 film about a rich woman who becomes stranded on a Mediterranean island with her community yacht captain. Although they can’t stand each other at first, they soon see more in each other than they thought. The dramedy makes points about sex, love and politics that would later be remade in 2002 with Madonna. Italian with English subtitles.

A documentary following the dreams of six dancers from around the world before they perform at the Youth America Grand Prix. Entry for the May 11 Family Day on Aragon screenings at $5 and comes with popcorn.

In Darkness

Winner of the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 2011, “In Darkness” tells the true story of sewage worker Leopold Socha who helped hide Jews in a Nazi-occupied Polish city for 14 months. At first he sees it as a business opportunity, accepting money to hide the persecuted in the sewers, but it turns into a mission as the world up top becomes more dangerous and the people around him more suspicious.

The Misfits

Marilyn Monroe plays the recently divorced Rosylyn, who through her new friendship with three men (Clark Gable, Eli Wallach and Montgomery Clift) experiences freedom and happiness for the first time. However, as she falls in love, she must make a choice.

In this Academy Award nominee, a father, Eliezer, and son, Uriel, are competitive professors in Talmudic studies with completely different views on Judaism. When the father is called with the news he is the winner of the acclaimed Israel Prize, he finally has a chance to shine. However, Uriel learns it was actually meant for him, and must decide whether to break the news to his father or let him take the award. Hebrew with English subtitles.

In this film, by “American History X” director Tony Kaye, Adrien Brody plays a substitute teacher (alongside a power-packed cast) who makes all efforts to never bond with his students or fellow teachers. However, at a new school, he encounters frustrated teachers and angry students, and finds himself connecting with those around him.

Before the Rains

Henry Moore lives with his wife and son in 1937 India and employs a woman, Sajani, as their maidservant. Her brother, T.K., is asked to join the freedom movement to liberate India from British rule, and his thoughts that the status quo is best changes when he finds out his sister is having an affair with Moore.

Follow Me: The The Yoni Netanyahu Story

A sneak preview of the documentary telling the story of Yonatan Netanyahu. As the commander of an Israeli army commando unit, he led the rescue mission at a Ugandan airport in 1976 to free 248 passengers held hostage aboard an airplane.

Chico & Rita

This illustrated film tells the story of jazz pianist Chico and the beautiful singer Rita. When they come together in 1940s Havana, their love takes them to the United States and back to Cuba in time for the revolution.

Monsieur Lazhar

This French Canadian film is about a elementary classroom suffering from the loss of their favorite teacher. A new Algerian teacher, Balchir Lazhar, comes to replace her and tries to help them through their loss while becoming the new head of the class. The students become close to him, finally meeting a teacher who challenges them to become better, smarter people. French with English subtitles.
