WASHINGTON ― President Barack Obama on Wednesday sharply rebuked Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for criticizing the physical appearances of women.
“You had somebody who basically insulted women ... in terms of how he talks about them and talks about their weight and talks about how they look instead of the content of their character and their capabilities, which is not somebody I want in the Oval Office that my daughters are listening to and that sons are listening to,” he said during an interview on Steve Harvey’s radio show.
During the first presidential debate, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton illustrated Trump’s history of disrespecting women by pointing out that he had referred to onetime Miss Universe pageant winner Alicia Machado as “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping.”
Trump criticized Machado the morning after the debate, saying, “She gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem. We had a real problem with her.”
Such comments demonstrate why Trump isn’t fit to be president, Obama told Harvey.
“Across the board, you’ve got somebody who appears to only care about himself,” he said.
Trump has mocked different people’s weight over the course of his career, including calling women such things as “fat slobs,” “pigs” and “dogs.”
