Norman Vincent Peal, the author of The Power of Positive Thinking, says there are two paths in life: love or fear.

It's that simple.

My friend's take on this is that most people travel both paths and sometimes at the same time.
For me, fear tends to strike in the middle of the night. Sometimes I can't sleep because of some needling worry.

When it happens I look at my husband, who is snoring peacefully, and decide -- while unfortunate -- I must disturb him to tap into his midnight wisdom.

My husband is a balm when life is tricky. That said, my husband prefers to counsel during waking hours.

He rolls over and says: "Call Tokyo. Someone is awake in Tokyo who will talk with you."

I laugh and quickly realize I'm on my own. I have to be my own balm.

Of course now that I have Peal's two-step approach to life I realize I just need to opt out of fear.

I now have the cure for midnight worries and no one could be happier than my husband who is pleased we won't have to pay for midnight calls to Tokyo.
