There was no one like Prince.

The legendary artist forged his own path in the music industry, and, though often celebrated for his brilliance, Prince's uncommon theatrics, outfits and public persona also left him misunderstood. It's a fact that wasn't lost on the late musician, who spoke about being perceived as strange on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" back in 1996.

Prince admitted that he certainly saw himself as "different," and was well aware of how the public perceived him.

"I'm sure after the past two years or so, it's become quite strange," he said. "I hear they're calling [Britain's Princess] Diana 'The Artist Formerly Known as Princess' now. I mean, if it's gotten to that point..."

He did add a caveat.

"Understand: Everything is relative. [It's] not weird to me," Prince pointed out.

Oprah then asked the artist what he wanted the public to know. Prince answered with just two words.

"The music."

OWN will air Prince's full 1996 interview from "The Oprah Winfrey Show" this Saturday, April 23, at 8 p.m. ET.
