The parents of Reeva Steenkamp were satisfied with the five-year prison sentence received by Oscar Pistorius, according to a family lawyer. Revealed by Judge Thokozile Masipa on Tuesday in a South African court room, the sentence came several weeks after the double-amputee track star had been found guilty of culpable homicide for fatally shooting Steenkamp, his girlfriend, in February 2013.
"Justice was served," Steenkamp family lawyer Dup De Bruyn told reporters outside the court on Tuesday after the sentence was announced, reported Reuters. De Bruyn also said that the judge had given "the right sentence."
June Steenkamp, the mother of the slain 29-year-old law graduate and model, said “unless you can magic her back,” the family will never have complete closure, according to The Independent.
"He's going to pay something," she also said.
Pistorius, 27, was found guilty of culpable homicide but acquitted of murder in September, with the defense claiming that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder on the night of the fatal shooting at his home.
"I really don't think any of us will heal anytime soon," Gina Myers, a close friend of Steenkamp, told The Associated Press after the sentencing. "There will always be questions."
Masipa also issued Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence connected to separate unlawful shooting incident that occurred in a restaurant, just weeks before Steenkamp's death, in 2013.
