Steenkamp Family Lawyer: 'Justice Was Served' With Pistorius' 5-Year Jail Term

Steenkamp Lawyer: 'Justice Was Served'

The parents of Reeva Steenkamp were satisfied with the five-year prison sentence received by Oscar Pistorius, according to a family lawyer. Revealed by Judge Thokozile Masipa on Tuesday in a South African court room, the sentence came several weeks after the double-amputee track star had been found guilty of culpable homicide for fatally shooting Steenkamp, his girlfriend, in February 2013.

"Justice was served," Steenkamp family lawyer Dup De Bruyn told reporters outside the court on Tuesday after the sentence was announced, reported Reuters. De Bruyn also said that the judge had given "the right sentence."

June Steenkamp, the mother of the slain 29-year-old law graduate and model, said “unless you can magic her back,” the family will never have complete closure, according to The Independent.

"He's going to pay something," she also said.

Pistorius, 27, was found guilty of culpable homicide but acquitted of murder in September, with the defense claiming that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder on the night of the fatal shooting at his home.

"I really don't think any of us will heal anytime soon," Gina Myers, a close friend of Steenkamp, told The Associated Press after the sentencing. "There will always be questions."

Masipa also issued Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence connected to separate unlawful shooting incident that occurred in a restaurant, just weeks before Steenkamp's death, in 2013.

Pistorius took a grilling from State Prosecutor Gerrie Nel on Tuesday and Wednesday, often having to admit that he killed his girlfriend. He maintains that the shooting was an accident, and got emotional several times over the course of his testimony.
"You know the same happened to Reeva's head? It exploded."

Nel showed a video, previously broadcast by Sky News, of Pistorius firing a gun at a watermelon and saying that it was "softer than brains." He drew a connection between the recording and Reeva Steenkamp's bloodied head.
"Reeva had died while I was holding her."

Pistorius told the court how he tried to put his fingers in Steenkamp's mouth to help her breath, and attempted to stop the bleeding from one of several gunshot wounds.
"I wasn't meaning to shoot anyone."

On Wednesday, Nel accused Pistorius of changing his tune about whether firing his gun was accidental.
"Out of fear, I didn't have time to think, I discharged my firearm."

Pistorius was asked several times if he was worried about the implications of his testimony.
"When I heard a noise inside the toilet, without thinking in fear I fired four shots."

"Why are you getting emotional now, when I ask the hard questions?"

Nel rolled his eyes Wednesday when Pistorius' voice began to crack.
"I don't think you can ask him why he's emotional now. He's been emotional throughout."
At several points on Wednesday, Judge Thokozile Masipa stayed Nel's line of question.
"I was there, I don't have to look at a picture."

Nel showed the court a photo of Steenkamp's head after showing the watermelon video.
"Reeva doesn't have a life anymore because of what you've done."
