Hostage Situation At Wisconsin Motorcycle Shop Ends With 1 Dead

Two people were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover.

A standoff at a motorcycle shop in Wisconsin ended Saturday afternoon with one person dead, a police officer injured and a suspect in custody, police said.

Neenah Police Chief Kevin Wilkinson said the "scene has been made safe" at a press conference at 1:30 p.m. A police officer was injured during the incident when a bullet hit his helmet, but he was treated and released from an area hospital.

Chief Kevin Wilkinson said at a briefing Saturday evening that during the hourslong standoff, a male came out of the building holding a weapon and did not comply with police instructions to drop it. He said the person was shot at by officers, but also may have been shot at from inside the building. That person was taken to a hospital and later died, police said.

Earlier Saturday, police confirmed on Facebook that shots were fired during the standoff at Eagle Nation Cycles, though it was unclear whether police or a suspect fired the shot. The police called it a "high risk incident."

Wilkinson said negotiations continued over several hours, and a person was taken into custody around 1 p.m. Police are not releasing a name. Wilkinson said authorities were still uncertain what spurred the initial confrontation, or exactly how many hostages had been inside. He estimated between three and 10.

Several surrounding businesses were evacuated, police said on Facebook.

Neenah Mayor Dean Kaufert estimated 30 shots were fired at the motorcycle shop, Post-Crescent Media reported.

"It's every community's nightmare," Kaufert said.

Several agencies are still investigating.
