Watch out when reaching for the trail mix this week.
A major sunflower seed producer recently expanded a recall to even more snacks than initially included. The potentially dangerous trail mixes, sunflower kernels and snack bars could have been sold all across the country, food company SunOpta said in a statement last month.
On Monday, yet another snack company recalled its seed-based treats, while Creative Snacks Co. expanded its lineup of previously-recalled snack mixes.
In total, more than 100 products are being recalled, affecting brands including Planters and trail mixes and trail mix bars sold at Walmart, Meijer, Top and Hy-Vee.
The recall initially included only SunOpta's sunflower kernels produced between Feb. 1 and Feb. 19, but last month the recall expanded to include snacks produced through April 21, according to a report from the Food and Drug Administration.
Bagged sunflower kernels from Planters and Sunrich Naturals were among the more recent items affected, alongside earlier recalls for Trader Joe's salad, Wheatberry Salad and Sweet and Salty Almond bars from beloved Florida-based grocery chain Publix, and other snacks from TreeHouse Foods, Kroger and more brands.
The recalled products "may be impacted by sunflower seeds contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes," as TreeHouse said in a statement in early May. The bacterium can cause serious infections in anyone, though pregnant women, newborns, older adults and those with weakened immune systems are especially at risk, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
No illnesses have been reported, but products are being recalled as a cautionary measure.
Affected products could have been distributed nationwide, with best-by dates mostly in 2016 and 2017. Check the FDA website for exact package labeling and more information.
Products should be thrown away or taken to the place of purchase for a full refund.
